When we got the Mini last year they wouldn't program the fob to drop the top ... as you say 'safety' reasons. The nanny state again?!?

Now I think this is utter tosh, I think they said it was due to safety for kids

How does it affect a childs safety? Unless they are swinging from the hood in the first place

I cant work it out?

My wife has a mini cab and it has the roof open feature.

She uses it to open the roof BEFORE she lets the kids out of the house to get in the mini as its safer than opening it with them strapped in the baby seats trying to reach for the hood as it opens!

I got mine in Oct last year and I got them to program it for me. No questions and no issues!

Why on earth would they stop it!

Didn't I read somewhere they had disabled the boot unlock/lock feature as people were locking their keys in the boot?

I have it and am just careful!

Nanny State I believe, no-one wants to take resposability if they are stupid!

This got changed some while back - the roof opening from the key fob is now set to disabled by default, although most friendly dealers will enable this for you. Even new cars can have this enabled.

Don't let them charge you for it either, it takes them all of five minutes to change the setting ;)

It didn't work when i got mine in march 05 so asked for it to be switched on when the car went back for warranty which they did no probs. I argued that the brochure said it came on the car.

This is my understanding as well, mine was disabled after a service a while ago (without them telling me) but I was able to get it put back on again without any fuss
