: dealer fit JCW question

I recently bought a 57 reg dealer fit JCW S and I'm having difficulty with my insurer (Directline) in getting them to properly cover the car because they don't have the dealer fit JCW listed separetly from the full factory JCW.

So when I last spoke to them they asked exactly what was changed by the dealer and how much power increase each of these things gave the car (over the standard S).

Could someone perhaps list the changes that have taken place when the dealer installed the JCW kit onto the standard S?

I know the power has gone from 170 to 192bhp (and i'm lovin that fact!) but don't know all the details of how that's been achieved!

Thanks for any help.
Chris

I had the same problem with my insurers. All that has been changed is:

A new air filter
New exhaust (although i'm not sure if its just the cat back or the whole thing)
And an engine re-map.

Even with this information my insurers decided to insure mine as a factory JCW:puzzled:

But I'm not complaining, cos the factory JCW is a lower insurance group than the JCW kit;)

The exhaust is a cat back with the tuning kit.

You shouldn't have any problems insuring a JCW kitted S, but you will need to use insurers who allow modifications as you have a modified car and not a standard factory model, therefore it will not be on anyones lists. The fact the tuning kit is produced by Mini and installed at dealers means nothing as far as insurance is concerned.

Adrian Flux have always been good to me and I hear good things about Greenlight on here also.

mel deabreu: I would urge you to clarify the situation with your insurer and get confirmation in writing if your happy with the deal. You have insurance for a car you don't own and the worse case scenario is they will void your insurance when you will most need it....

Fully agree with you, if he has a bump and they realise its not a factory JCW they have a get out clause not to pay out!

Don't worry, they have insured it in the same group as the factory JCW, but are fully aware that it isn't. They have listed all the mods that came with the kit, and still have it down as a Cooper S on the paperwork, so its all fine. :)

They will probably realise that they could be making more money out of me one day and place it in a higher insurance group.

Sounds like they have insured it correctly then! :D

The tuning kitted S won't have an insurance grouping of it's own as such. It is just an S with added power (eg risk in the view of insurance companies...) so what matters is how the company reacts to that extra risk.

This is why you need to find a company that actually understands mods. I recently had to renew my insurance and obtained quotes ranging from £1600 to £450, including pretty much all the hundreds inbetween

I've recently had the same problem. Finding a company that will insure a modified car and a convicted driver  oops. Finally got sorted gone thru Royal Sun Alliance, very competitive

found this info on the net which lists it all:

Sports exhaust with chrome finish tailpipes
Adapted air filter
Modified engine control unit
John Cooper Works badges Performance data
192 hp
250 Nm peak torque between 1,500 and 5,000 rpm. With Overboost deployed, peak torque is increased to 270 Nm between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm.
0-62 mph in 6.8 seconds

.....don't know how totally correct it is but seemed a good source of info.

Mentioned all this to Directline and they put the premium up £30 for the 4 months of the policy I have remaining, plus increased the excess to £750!......looks like I'll be shopping around when the renewal is due.

Now all that's sorted I can start enjoying the bags of extra power when compared to my old 03 Cooper!:D

I recently had a customer that had crashed his mini cooper s, and the insurance company refused to pay out beacuse he had not told them about him changing his lights and wheels.

I had exactly the same issue with DirectLine last March. I'd been with DL for about 15 years and given them good service but ended up leaving them over this matter. At 36 years old I was on the phone for absolutely ages to them as I was passed from person to person - in the end I got some ridiculous quote and an even more absurd excess premium. They just don't understand what the 'S' Works is and even if they did they seemed unsure of the rest of the dealer-fit options I had paid for.

In the end I went with Adrian Flux, faxed them the dealer spec and got them to put it on file and confirm this fact in writing to me. So there's no way AF can say they don't know what I've got now! After having someone hit me last year as well I can say that AF (and the policy with Norwich Union) was excellent and dealt with it very quickly.

I won't be going back to DirectLIne whilst I still have a non-standard car with a load of dealer-fit options.
