Swapped my old JCW for a Clubman D on Friday.

Initially I'd looked at an ex-demo car and after the test drive I had closed the driver door and noticed the glass rattled. Tried it at few times...does it every time. Never did this on the JCW. Tried the passenger door - no rattle.

Brought this to the attention of the dealer and he said he'd get it fixed under warranty if I bought it.

However, in the end I decided to get a new one - managed to get quite a bit off by getting two different dealers fighting over the sale.

Anyway, very happy with the car BUT it's got the same issue with the driver door window rattle. Presumably this is something to do with the fact that it's closing on the clubdoor as opposed to the main door frame as in other models.

Anybody else got the problem? Can it be fixed? Or do we have to live with it?

you'll find that there is an assortment of common rattles in the mini, but as you say this may be related to the clubman door.

I have a cooper hatch so I don't have this particular rattle, but I'm sure some clubman owners will post.

I borrowed my Dad's Clubman the other day and that has the same problem. I thought I'd got the seat belt caught at first, but the window rattle is there everytime the drivers door is shut. The only thing I can put it down too is how it locks into the rear door.

Hence no problem on the passenger side or the Hatchback models.

Yeah, that's what I figured - although the dealer did agree that it was a problem with the demo car, so maybe there is something they can do...will ask them and post back.

With regards to general rattles...this is probably my only complaint about the JCW. Dash started rattling after a couple of years - really annoying.

For the moment, the Clubman is pretty silent...apart from the tractor engine.

I've got the rattle too - mentioned on the Clubman Owners' issues thread. I noticed it as soon as I got mine and went back to the dealer. I tried every Clubman that they had - showroom and used outside and they all did it so I guess it must be something to do with the presence of the clubdoor.

It's a pity - I remember when I got the JCW that it really felt like a quality car by the way the doors closed so firmly. The rattle takes the shine off a bit.

Would be quite happy to buy a version without a club door if they did one - can't see that it's ever going to get used.

I notice when I shut my drivers door that the 'wing mirror' vibrates a lot. I just shut the door less vigorously seems to solve it.

The most annoying thing with my drivers side window is that if I put it down and then back up again, I get a horrible smear on the inside of the window, which makes visibility a problem (Can't see the rattling wing mirror properly)!

I've already had a Clubdoor seal replaced as car was leaking in, and it is going in for the same problem again on Wednesday, it could be related I suppose, does anyone else get this smear?

yes I get this smear, worse on the driver's door window than the passengers.

my cooper is now two years old and it's not quite as bad as when it was new, but still annoying especially after I have washed it !!.

and I also have all the usual rattles, etc

unfortunately I have never had the time ( or the patience ) to keep going back and forth to the dealers to have these common built in niggles looked at, so just live with them.

ps as a lot of the mini rattles, etc are built in at the factory it is very difficult for a dealer to actually fix them, as you will see if you read the various posts on the forum.

I have the smearing problem on my Clubman S. Drives me mad! I keep some tissue and glass cleaner in the car to sort it our but fortunately at least the window doesn't rattle.

our clubman has this horrible smearing on the inside of the drivers' window too:confused:

didn't notice it too much last winter, but since november(ish) its been a real pain.

i wonder if it's salt getting inside the door somehow:eek:

I'll have a word with the dealers next time i'm passing, and probably get brushed off with some lame excuse-as usual:rolleyes:

Mine is meant to be looked at by a Mini engineer tomorrow, he's coming at the request of the dealer as I've had so many rattles etc.

I will get the dealer to ask about the smearing on the windows as I also have that problem :(

All this is assuming 2 things - 1 - he can get to my dealer from the factory, 2 - I can get my car out of my road, there is a hill at the end of my road and so far not been able to get up it and out

I don't intend taking to many chances and end up with a dent! ;)

I have a window rattle too - but I drive a Cabrio! The rattle is between the front and rear glass. Of course I don't have a Club Door, but the rear glass on the Cabrio does retract of course......

Dealer tried to fix it and failed, and is still trying to get me to pay the bill

No window rattle here. Must be the only one.

Streaky windows I have. I had it on my 1st Gen Cooper too. Dealer chnaged the bottom window seals under warranty. This was a common 1st Gen problem. Have a search for some of the threads.

I had the window smear too on the JCW. In the end the window motor completely packed up and had it replaced. After that it didn't smear.

No smearing on the Clubman...yet.

Both my windows smear up too after roll-down-up after wash. Not so nice.

Hi Guys, asked about the smearing this morning, I was told it is polish that gets on the seal. Did give the seal a good clean last time I washed the car about a week ago and put windows up and down a few time and they seemed ok. I will see how it goes.

That's very helpful - I was beginning to wonder if it was an excess of grease on the workings inside the door, but obviously not.

So the answer is - don't bother to polish your Clubman

My smearing is on the inside of the glass, I've never polish the inside ;)

It isn't the width of the glass either, about a 4 or 5 inches wide smear

Me too. No inside window polish and smear partway across the window only.

So maybe it could be surplus grease deposit from inside the door mechanisms?

Steering us back to the window rattle...

Only just got round to booking it in with the dealer for next Thursday, so I'll let you know if they can manage to resolve it.

Car has been with the dealer two days, they called today to say that the rattle has been fixed!

"Completely fixed?" I asked

"Completely" they said.

Fantastic.

However...when I went to pickup...it wasn't fixed.

But give them their due, it is better - but still does not close as firmly as the passenger door - or any doors on a hatchback.

They said they can't do any more, which I believe is probably the case. The door closing onto the suicide door is never going to be as firm as a door closing onto the frame.

Annoying, but there you go. Hopefully they'll fix it in the next version.

So...we have adesign flaw or a manufacturing flaw? Either way, the customer should not have to put up with it......becuase if you do accept it, get used to it, and then find you can't sell it on becuase the punters don't like the rattle......

I too have the awful smearing on the inside of the drivers window. Strangely it never used to do this and its arrival seemed to coincide with a very bad rattle in the door every time I go over a sharp bump. I am certain that something has come loose inside the door.

Only a trip to the dealer will tell I guess....

I'd have to say that after living with the "fixed" window for a couple of days, I don't notice the problem anymore.

The rattle IS still there, but only noticeable when I'm specifically looking for it, or showing someone the problem.

But during normal usage, the door closes with a firm/solid sound as I have come to expect from a Mini. So it is a lot better.

Ignorant question from a newbie still waiting for the blessed Dutch bureaucracy to register his car...

...Do we know what is actually rattling? Has someone come up with a suitable bodge to fix this design flaw (eg. fixing a thin rubber strip to the clubdoor at the 'rattle-point')?
