Am I stange because when I wave at other clubmans most of the time I get some very strange looks.

Not at all - I wave - well I have done twice and got a positive response but Clubmans seem to be few and far between in South Yorkshire. I think you are more likely to get a positive response from Clubman owners as they are still relatively rare on the roads - there are too many hatches out there now and not all too many by Mini2 forum members these days!

I am not sure whether to wave or not - certainly I would acknowledge someone who waved me.
I had a Land Rover Defender a few years ago and almost without exception we would acknowledge each other - not so much a wave but a raised index finger on steering wheel sort of thing - if you know what I mean...
