: northern New England?

Anybody up for a group drive in northern New England before the snow falls? Im in Burlington, VT - so VT and/or NH make sense to me. Getting towards Maine is a task. Northeast New York is nearby. Possibly a lap around Lake Champlain (not sure how long that would take though).

I'm probably not the best person to organize something as I don't completely know my way around. I'm laid back enough that it doesn't bother me if I don't know where I'm going, but some people don't like that. If no one else volunteers, I could be persuaded to plan a route - but I'd rather someone else do it :)

Fall color will be on its way out soon, so traffic may not be that bad on the back roads.

Any ideas?

Sounds like an interesting idea...

Here's a website that may prove useful for route finding around the lake:

http://www.champlainbikeways.org/Default.htm

It's for bicycle riding, but that should be about right for motoring too... It looks like depending upon where/how you cross the lake (by bridge or ferry) the trip could get very long. The full south to north route on the VT side is 196.6 miles. The full north to south route on the NY side is 165.5 miles - so a round trip would be 362 miles of (I'd imagine) all 2 lane roads. Guesstimate of 8-10 hours of motoring? Seems a little ambitious to me. And that would include border crossing too...

The Burlington VT - Port Kent NY ferry stops running this weekend (Oct 20th), so the only available ferries would be Grand Isle - Plattsburgh and Charlotte - Essex.

Shouldn't I be working? :)

C'mon people, there must be more MINI owners in northern New England / upstate New York / southern Quebec out there...

I just moved up here from south florida last week, apparently just in time for the snow. Totally up from some motoring, but I have the michelin alpines on right now, so it should be interesting.

I think we're all on snow tires now. I saw MGB Boy's S in the parking lot at work and it looked like his wheels had shrunk :) Those 15's just don't fill out the wheel wells like the 17's did...

I'm heading down to Peabody / North Shore for the drive this Saturday... anyone else?

Should we just go ahead and do a drive soon up north? Early December shopping trip to the outlet zoo in North Conway (half joking)

bcbeme, where in NH are you?

I felt kinda odd putting on my snow tires/wheels on Monday when it was 70° out! Better to do it on a day like that than on a cold snowy day when you really need them, though. I'm still trying to get used to the look of the 15" rims. I must say, though, I'm actually looking forward to some snow just so I can find out how the new set up handles it (Michelin Arctic-Alpins wrapped around Borbet Type H rims). I'm up for some winter motoring...

It's the first weekend of home conference play for UVM hockey this weekend, so my only "big" drive will be to Gutterson Fieldhouse. Hopefully you have good weather for the Peabody shindig, I keep hearing nasty rumors of some manner of Nor'easter late this weekend.

Snid,
I am in scenic Merrimack NH, just south of Manchester just north of Nashua on rt 3. I love these back roads; but why do they always put telephone poles on the "missed apex" side of the curves

Hmmm sounds like fun. I am in Manchester, NH, but I used to live in Essex Junction (Back in my IBM Days). Would be fun to explore the back roads around the lake, and possibly into Canada...then stop off back in Burlington for dinner at one of the nice places on Church Street.
