As far as the msgs i've read no detailed or informative comments have been made for 2nd gen automatic gear box.
Being an ex-owner of 2003 mc with cvt i had too many problems with that.
harsh morning stumbles, eml lights, late responses and so on..
But now i have a brand new mc with just 700 kms and with auto transmission on.My first opinions are it is quite well in operation but i have still some suspects..Like for example it shows delayed responses to light throttle acts.Am i mistaken??
And now i can feel speed changes much more compared to cvt.
So..let me ask:1st gen auto gearbox or 2nd gen??

The first and second gen 6 speed autos are the same (or almost the same).

The second gen is a lot more efficient and a tad faster, but both are good gearboxes, far superior to the CVT

Some new owners or loaner drivers complain about a delay from a dead stop, some reviewers and long time owners never mention it. Do the autos have the hill-holder device (why would it) and could that be the cause? Is the delay also at speed?

I haven't noticed a delay, from a dead stop or while driving. I have noticed something that seems like a hill holder on my auto. My dad's drive is very steep. When I try to back other autos out, they roll down the hill before I can move my foot. I thought his car would end up a hood ornament for our old Pilot. The MINI stays put after I release the brake until I press the accellerator.

Thanks and sorry about the slow response to your quick one. I suspect some of the delay complaints have to do with the sport button not being engaged. Some day I'll have hands on experience. Right now it's all ground prep for a purchase, even that is turning into a OCD experience. Obsession indeed.

I drive from the south coast to LHR/LGW airports & Hemel at least twice a week, auto's a godsend stuck on the M3 & M25, couple that with the fact that I have rather dodgy knees it's an auto for me everytime, out of necessity more than anything
However, that said the auto box on the 1st gen IMHO left a lot to be desired & in-fact was the reason I didn't buy a new mini until the 2nd gen was launched. I found the 1st gen far less responsive & jerky which verged upon vomit inducing.
The 2nd gen box is by no means a 'fantastic' gearbox & so far IMO better suited to the Cooper, although my view may change once Berry have sorted my accelerator issues...here's hoping!

I love my Cooper D auto!
My question is: Has anyone got one of the newer auto's without the paddle shift on the steering wheel? I heard they took them off and have them as an option.
Does the 'box without the paddles still have the Ds mode? I use that a lot, but don't use the paddles often at all.

Wish we got the Dooper here! On the US Cooper, the transmission has the same interface and function as before, just the paddles are gone.
