I've just ordered a new Cooper D with the 6 speed auto box.
Eventually I'll probably remap it but...
Does the auto box limit the tuning capability? Will a remap actually make much difference on the auto box or are the ratio's etc. rubbish?
I haven't got paddleshift just the steptronic on the gearstick.
One other question, does the steptronic allow you to select the gear you want to be in precisely as opposed to the maximimum gear you want to be in?
For example if I wanted to accelerate in 5th would the kickdown be activitated and the gearbox drop down or would it stick to 5th?

hi. I have the cooper S auto. I can't answer you on the remapping but from the selecting gear thing, i've found that as long as you select SD/manual and like you say chose 5th gear it will let you accelerate as long as your engine speed is able to let you change to a higher gear. As i found a few times before I tried to select a higher gear and it wouldn't let me, same as when your slowing down, it will drop to a lower gear itself even if you don't ask it to while its in manual. Very clever car though. :D hope that makes sense, i'm not very good at explaining things :P
1 question, how did you manage to not get paddle shifts with your car? I was positive all auto's came with the paddles??? Could be wrong!!!

Ahh cool, Cheers for the reply!
Sounds a lot better than my current auto box...even if you do have the engine speed it drops down a gear if you put the throttle above 80% say...
The paddle shift was an optional extra...pretty sure mine doesn't have it! Although would love it if it does! Maybe it's only standard on the cooper S?

yeah its a good box. i use motorway mostly and find the paddles are handy if say you want to overtake something without it dropping a gear or 2 i just flip the paddle so that it stays in 6th and plant my foot hehe, so it doesn't give you any gear dropping that you don't want!! :D

From the guys at Lohen, (peter really) it is possible to tune an auto. They had a cooper convertible that they had tuned at United...
