: Tuning performance gains

Hi all, I'm thinking of a future move to a MCS from my Z4 3.0 to be a bit more sensible and stumbled upon this very helpful forum :D

I didn't know much about the cars at all but read with interest the tuning options, particularly the work done by P-Torque (if only I could get 30bhp more from the Z4 AND make it more fuel efficient for £300!!)

People seem to get 210 bhp from just the re-map and significant torque gains, but what I was interested in is the 0-60 times after the work, anyone tried it?

Apologies if that has been covered but I've been looking a while to no avail, I did see someone drop a second on the 30-70 time though...

If anyone has done the re-map and the exhaust too, I'd also be interested in their times and total cost of the mods!

Cheers

The best mod on a R53 is the 17% pulley £'s for bhp, then the bill mounts !!

Cheers for that ;) was thinking about the R56- does that still apply or is it supercharger-related?
How much is it and what do you gain?
Thanks!

On R53 S/C about 20 bhp+ cost around £500 with no remap. R56 T/C you need to talk to a specialist. :) Dave at ThinkMini know's the car inside out.

Rest assured, any supercharged or turbocharged MINI will eaisly offer more in exchange for a few gold beer tokens.

The reason the Z4 wouldn't be as cheap to modify is down to the normally aspirated (i.e. the Z4) v.s. turbocharged (i.e. the MINI)

Performance of forced induction cars can always be eaisly increased around 20% above original OEM output with little to no effort as OEM applications are never on the limit and the forced induction technology allows a lot more than OEM's ever dare send the car out with. It might be a touch less reliable but and if used in anger all the time then might not last as long either... but you will get a lot more fun out of it. Life repeats itself, same old story with every other turbocharged car ever made. Think Escort RS Turbo as a perfect example / classic illustration...

Thanks Emmett, the tune-ability of the Minis is a blessing!

So what will the 20% performance gain do to the 0-60? What kind of cars would it start to hustle around a track?

Any thoughts welcome!

That depends on the tuning package you choose. I hear a lot of people talking about Bluefin which is the DIY tuning device you can buy from superchips. Seems popular. Not tried it myself though. Think there are endless topics discussing the device.

There is no Bluefin for the R56. Superchips offers a remap but not a handheld unit due to the complexity of the ECU. You have to get it installed by a Superchips dealer but it envolves the ECU coming out of the car i believe.

I spoke to Superchips and they said they aren't interested in making one for the R56 Mini so wont be making one anytime soon.

Sounds like they may have to change a chip inside or something. That's a bit sad really. Guess MINI made it difficult on purpose so people wouldn't be tweaking their MINI's DIY. I'll bet if you're doing it the proper way with the equipment at the MINI factory then you'd just plug into the ECU and map it live.

Are they different ECU's in the turbo'd ones then? Isn't it Seimens SE2000 in the earlier cars?

The new ECU is the MED17 or for the diesel the DEC17 Tri Core. Its a real B**ch to read or write files to it with old tooling. Im not sure what exactly causes it to be hard but theres someting standing in the way.

Saying that alot of companies now have the necessary tools to remap the R56's etc. just people are so busy going to P-Torque that noone has checked the maret. Iv had mine remapped by Motorsport Developments a few days ago and its perfect. Took less than an hour to do using the new Genius Slave.

Almost every Evo Chips dealer can now do them, same goes for a lot of the small businesses. The odd Big business wont be able to do it still mind you due to being lazy or focusing on other markets, such as Superchips or AMD ESSEX. They were supposed to be remapping mine months ago but said they were waiting on the tooling. It turns out they are trying to upgrade thier existing tool instead of buying one that can do it out of the box which is near on impossible apparently.
