We called into our 'local' BMW dealer today to get some minor work done on my wife's Z4 and came out with a brand new Cooper Diesel Graphite. Well not quite out, because the salesman persuaded me to wait until the new '59' registration. We now have to wait until a week Tuesday to collect it.
I had become bored with our runabout (a Polo 130bhp turbo-diesel GT) and was hankering after a change.
Whilst I was 'supervising' the work on my wife's Z4 she was out looking around the plot and came to tell me that there was a rather nice looking (all black) 2nd hand Cooper diesel.
We returned after a very pleasant lunch, took the black car out and were (almost completely) blown away with how much better it was than the Polo. The loss of power didn't seem too noticeable, but the handling was so much better. It will make a perfect runabout for us, providing some of the driving enjoyment that our main cars (M3 and Z4) provide; an area where the Polo suffered.
When we got back to the showroom the salesman pointed out the new Graphite model sitting there saying 'buy me'. The specs were almost identical, but the cost difference was less than £3k, which bought 20k miles fewer in the new car. No contest.
Within less than an hour I had signed on the dotted line, having got an unseen valuation for the Polo, which was more than I had expected.
We can now look forward to better fuel economy, much lower running costs and a derisorily low road fund tax (helping to offset the rates we pay on the other cars!).
Can't wait for the next 9 days to disappear (apart from the fact that I have some pressing work deadlines!).
