We dropped our Mini off at our local BMW dealer (Sytner, High Wycombe) for an oil service (@ £320) and while we knew there would be some other work to be done weren't exactly expecting a quote of £1,350.
However, they have a new guy in charge of the Mini bit and he said to the missus that it seemed like a lot of work for a car that age (54 plate) and he'd speak to Mini customer services about a reduction due to goodwill.
What they eventually agreed was that they'd look at the price for parts and the price for labour and THEY'D pay for the cheapest bit. So it the labour came to more than the part, we'd pay for labour. And if the part was more expensive then we'd pay for the part.
In the end, the final bill was just under £550. (Though in fairness that didn't include two new tyres which were on the original quote but we've bought separately.)
Oh, and they also left a voucher in the car for a day at a local spa.
So all in all, the bill was reduced by about half - a better result than it could have been.
