I want to talk about MPG.

I have a 59 plate Cooper (petrol). I've had her a week today and have named her Mindy Mini. During this week I have done 650 miles (all necessary - honest ;)) but I have been very good in trying to run the engine in. I havent taken her above 85 (that was the exception - only taken her that high twice) or above 4k revs. My commute is 100 miles a day and is mainly motorway. I have been trying to vary my speed on the motor way between 55 and 80 to give the engine a bit of variability. Obviously hard to work her through the gears a lot on motorway drives.

Anyway, She was delivered with 1/2 tank of fuel - Dont know exactly how much in terms of volume. After that went I filled up wiht Tesco super unleaded stuff and was v happy to get an average of 49mpg from the tank. (assuming that its right) Filled up again with the same stuff and reset all the clocks etc. I did about 20 miles town driving which gave me mpg of about 32mpg. Its slowly creeping back up with the couple of motorway journeys that ive done since but its only around 42mpg.

I suppose my question is what should I be expecting in reality for round town, motorway and combined driving? I know what they mini website says but we all know these are caculated at optimum driving conditions and we all know that we never ever drive to that kind of standard!

Thanks in advance!

45 mpg on average I would say, 50 on a long run and 40 around town.

Those are the numbers I get. If my trip has a lot of hills, or I am to agressive with the throttle then it can change to 42, 45, 39 respectively.

Out of interest - do you trust the mpg calculated by the computer or calculate it yourself? I have doubts over the accuracy of the computer - it always seems to be 4-5mpg higher than my calculation, maybe my Mini's glass is always half-full ;) just can't quite trust it particularly the how many miles left in tank calculation.

im going by the computer but i mentally calculate the miles im getting on the trip meter and dividing it by 8 gallons (the tank size) and it works out close enough.
