Just got a Mini 2002 and I'm having some problems working the windows that I am not sure is a problem with the car electrics or something I'm doing...?

When I flick the switch with the engine on the right (drivers) windows goes up and down all the way without having told it the button, but with the left, it goes down auto, but you have to hold it to get it up, manually, which is really annoying.

Is this a problem with the car?

Neither of the windows in my May 2002 build MCS are auto-up.

To keep costs down Mini in those days had no sensor to tell if a child or pet had their head stuck out the window. So the following happens, I have added my guess at the reasoning.
Auto one shot down for both windows. Can't harm anyone opening a window. No auto up on the passenger side. Well there could be a child or idiot sat there and they could crush someone/something in the window. No auto up on the drivers side with engine off. Well there could be a child or idiot sat there and they could crush someone/something in the window. Auto up drivers side when engine running and you haven't opened the door. If the door hasn't been opened then only the driver could be sat there and the driver is a responsible adult. If the door is opened the driver may have got out so it becomes the same as if the engine is off. So your Mini is behaving normally.
