I am a reasonably successful small business owner who presently drives a BMW 528i. With my children now grown and away I am considering downsizing to a Mini. Any suggestions on what to look for or consider would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome! You should definately get a Mini, they're such fun to drive! I have an 07 Cooper with chilli pack, 17" crown spoke alloys and I love it, I wouldn't go back to another make now. :)

if it's going to be your only car consider if you can live with less space.

it's really only a 2+2, and sitting in the back is not that comfortable and also reduces the luggage space.

I would say that this would be your main concern when downsizing from a BMW 5 series.

Get a new one or a used one from an "enthusiast".
Upgrade the tires as soon as you can.
Since you've had a BMW you know the add-ons you can live without.
The leather is nice and the sunroof is too, but will eventually rattle.
