: 60mm Lowering Springs badgerthedon Aug 13th, 2010, 07:32 PM Hi guys,
I've got a 04 JCW on 18" R105's. I wanna lower it 60mm.
Firstly: Where the hell can I get some from? Can't find any anywhere
Secondly: Will they be ok with my 18's? I've heard I might have problems on full lock, but that don't bother me, I will just have to do a5 point turn instead of 3
Advice is much appreciated
Oh, and I cant afford coilovers adam_Randell Aug 14th, 2010, 02:35 PM you cant find any because they dont exist. a 60mm drop on standard dampers is ridiculous. they would be sooooo bouncy, solid and totally un-drivable plus ' be replacing them every 10,000 miles!
if you want to go 60mm you need coilovers. you can get coilovers from £470 which imo is a bargain badgerthedon Aug 14th, 2010, 03:32 PM Oh, well if they dont exist then im buggered. Howevr I had a 309 gti lowered 110mm and that was awesome. So much fun. Lasted a good 30000 miles before i sold it too adam_Randell Aug 14th, 2010, 03:43 PM 110mm on springs?? your mad!
why not just get coilovers? SiBradbury Aug 14th, 2010, 03:44 PM Oh, well if they dont exist then im buggered. Howevr I had a 309 gti lowered 110mm and that was awesome. So much fun. Lasted a good 30000 miles before i sold it too
The problem with lowering a car anymore than 30 or 40mm is that you're compressing the shock absorbers through a good chunk of their travel before you've even driven anywhere. As for lowering 110mm, the shocks must have been totally compressed even when stationary!
As you strike me as a man who's not too bothered about the functionality of his car, you might want to look at these coilovers on eBay for £215. They're obviously bargain basement but you gets whats you pays for.

Do you even care? lol :D
Anything is gonna be better than lowering it that much using springs alone. 12month warranty too! adam_Randell Aug 14th, 2010, 04:27 PM lol i wouldnt put those on my car! haha, £490 was cheap for coilovers....a little over £200 is bordering on insane. my KW lowering springs were almost that much! haha
if i were u mate, id invest in a half decent set of coilovers because imo you will regret it in the long run. Me neither but some peeps just want the cheapest option! Keano Aug 16th, 2010, 11:33 AM Coilovers. Need coilovers - 60mm on springs firstly wont happen as there arent any for the mini as most know that anything over 40mm just on springs is going wreck the dampers, ride and rock your bones...
Plus you have 18" wheels so even 60mm down on coils you may need to be running some pretty hefty camber otherwise you will be rubbing...
The steering lock limiter is there to stop the wheels turning too far and rubbing - it makes the turning circle bigger but if your down 60mm your going to be rubbing when turning...
Would look good but in real driving its going to be a shambles... shaw Aug 16th, 2010, 11:36 AM i have 18" wheels and i lowered my 60mm i got the stretched tyres tho my never rubbs or buffs and look class Keano Aug 16th, 2010, 03:17 PM i have 18" wheels and i lowered my 60mm i got the stretched tyres tho my never rubbs or buffs and look class

Lowered on coilovers I assume ? Do you have the lock limiter ? What wheels ? offset et ? philz Aug 17th, 2010, 10:44 PM Has anyone tried those FK coilovers or are we just assuming that they're bound to be crap cos they're cheap? adam_Randell Aug 18th, 2010, 02:36 PM assuming they are crap because they are cheap - not only will they be less comfortable, they will not last as long as more expensive kits so you will need to replace them sooner. philz Aug 18th, 2010, 02:47 PM How do you know that? Do you know anything about FKs or are you just jumping to that conclusion that they have to be crap cos they're cheaper than the competition? Maybe the competition are ripping us all off?
MiniOneSam on MT seems to rate them pretty highly (http://www.minitorque.com/forum/224744-post15.html)
Venom-Simon also rates them (http://www.minitorque.com/forum/224297-post11.html)
They look like they go plenty low too. I'm certainly not going to dismiss them because they're not more expensive!

cheeper materials = shorter life span = replacing more often/product failure. just my opinion, we all have our own SiBradbury Aug 18th, 2010, 04:02 PM thats totally up to you mate. but cheeper (99.9% of the time) means cheaper materials, less research & development and a 'universal fitting' with no spaces on the dampers to put brake hoses etc.

So if those same FK kits had been advertised at £599 you'd have assumed they were good? :D adam_Randell Aug 18th, 2010, 04:18 PM So if those same FK kits had been advertised at £599 you'd have assumed they were good? :D
was that rhetorical? Anthony_h Aug 18th, 2010, 04:23 PM Fk suspension stuff is excellent, and they do last. Speak to VAG guys there's hundreds with them. FK now have a pretty good name for them selves for producing good quality suspension parts at a cheap price.
They work, they don't cost the earth, they offer decent ride and last. Also, do your self some research on FKs line of products. They don't just make CHEAP stuff as you put, they may not offer there full range to MINI, but they do many other coilover options for other cars, that range from £200 all way up about £700 for there top of the line fully adjustable kits. SiBradbury Aug 18th, 2010, 06:06 PM was that rhetorical?
Not if you have an answer! :)
What you say is totallytrue tho. We naturally perceive cheap stuff to be rubbish and we assume pricey stuff is going to be better. We're less likely to believe that FK are offering a bargain out of the goodness of their hearts when it's equally possible we're just being shafted by other more well known suspension companies! :D
I'm just as guilty as anyone of having this bias viewpoint but there's plenty of expensive stuff thats no better than inexpensive equivalents! adam_Randell Aug 18th, 2010, 06:07 PM Not if you have an answer! :)

yea, good point. i would rather be shafted and feel like i knew my suspension wasnt going to give up on me lol.
they may well be good coilovers but i wouldnt want to be the one to find out if they were or not. :) | |
