: Change from a Cooper D to a Cooper S? mouseman87 Sep 29th, 2010, 06:59 PM hey all!
ive been registered on this for a while now just never really posted anything! so here my first post goes! cant really find much info on this...................
I currently have a Cooper D nearly had it 2 years(bought new), which was purchased for the simple fact i expected to be doing around 20,000-30,000 miles a year! however i ended up with having use of a company vehicle for work jobs therefore the Cooper D only has around 14,000 miles(quite low!) on the clock and its 2nd birthday was this month!
Would it really kill my pocket in terms of fuel etc. if i was to change to a Cooper S? i understand the insurance is quite a bit more(with only being 23!) and road tax but the main concern is fuel! as ive always had very fuel efficient cars! the Cooper D seems to do about 500+ miles on 1 tank.........how many miles do you get out of a Cooper S as i understand the fuel tank is slightly bigger, but the mpg is of course quite a bit lower?
Also is the Cooper S a much better drive? feel much smoother/faster etc.? as on other forums some people have said its not much different than the Cooper D, however the offical figures of course show quite a bit better performance(0-60 etc.) for the Cooper S?
Cheers guys! DaleCooperS Sep 30th, 2010, 04:54 PM Cooper D is nearer in performance to the Cooper tbh. Cooper s is in a different league in a straight line but i would imagine the handling would be similar but slightly better due to sportier suspension etc.
You can easily get 400-450 miles off a tank in a Cooper S. Im only averaging 37 ish mpg but ive only had my car like 2 weeks and of those 2 weeks its been at the garage for about 6 days so ive been making the most of it when i have it :P
Im 22 and my insurance for the year is £900. Thats with 3 years no claims and having a liscence for 4 years. I dont think thats bad at all but old people will thinks its ridiculous lol.
If you get a Cooper S you won't regret it! mouseman87 Oct 9th, 2010, 07:31 PM Cooper D is nearer in performance to the Cooper tbh. Cooper s is in a different league in a straight line but i would imagine the handling would be similar but slightly better due to sportier suspension etc.

Going to look at a Cooper S next week! :) 85NIXMIN Oct 15th, 2010, 12:52 AM After reading all of these posts I decided to upgrade to a "S" finally! :D DaleCooperS Oct 16th, 2010, 05:40 PM Nice one!!
You wont regret it like i say.
My BMW garage finally proved goodie, sorted everything that was iffy and i love my car once again :D scheemy Oct 22nd, 2010, 01:49 PM The Cooper S is worth it just for the noise it makes!
To be honest i never got very good mpg but i was thrashing it most of the time!! mouseman87 Oct 24th, 2010, 07:41 PM hey all!
ordered a new Cooper S now :D collect in December! counting the days down! :) minicore Oct 24th, 2010, 08:15 PM ordered a new Cooper S now :D collect in December! counting the days down! :)
Congrats - you're gonna love it! :D MCSJon Oct 26th, 2010, 04:09 PM I spent months and months trying to decide between a Cooper D and an S (I needed to know how best to spend a car allowance and fuel expenses) and ended up creating a spreadsheet with all sorts of costs and formula's on it! :D
Suffice to say the S won out, and I don't think you'll be the slightest bit bothered about the economy when you're driving yours :)
FYI I drove Newcastle to Birmingham and back a few weeks ago and hit 48 to the gallon doing 75 or so on busy roads. I don't think you'll see a massive change in fuel costs, no more than you're probably expecting anyway! Lawrothegreat Oct 26th, 2010, 09:42 PM I've had 560+ miles out of a tank on the Cooper S, but that is really trying.
As for performance it depends how you drive the car. Remember turbo diesels' max torque figures occur over a very small engine speed range. For example, 65mph to 75mph in sixth gear would be very similar between the two cars. The difference being that the Cooper S will pull cleanly from 30mph in sixth gear up to 140mph, the D won't. If you're prepared to drive the S quickly, it is a much quicker car. But you won't get 500+ miles if you drive the car quickly! mouseman87 Nov 1st, 2010, 08:45 PM I've had 560+ miles out of a tank on the Cooper S, but that is really trying.

560 miles out of 1 tank
which engine was that with? im assuming the May 07-April 08 based on the car details in your profile? I notice the engines have been revised a couple of times in the last few years! mowog Nov 13th, 2010, 08:17 PM I solved the problem of D or S... I will have one of each...
I have a Clubman Cooper S coming this week it will share garage space with my Cooper D.
Photo Gallery of the Cooper D... I will have to rename the gallery when the Clubman arrives.
