Wondering if anybody could help. I had a leaky radiator replaced in a 02 cooper a couple of weeks ago. Since its return the temperature gauge has been sitting just a tiny bit above the halfway mark. I am sure before the change it sat just below it. I checked the odometer actual temperature thing at it sits at 90-93 when i'm really pushing it. So i assume that everything is ok. Does anybody know how accurate the odometer readout is?

Hi There,

I have a ScanGauge II on my 2006 (G1) Cooper and 90 degrees C is within the normal temperatures I see on that, which reads from the engine management through the OBD port.

My understanding is that the temp gauge in the MINI is what might best be described as a "dummy" gauge in that it basically has "steps" programmed into it so that it either reads normal (halfway) or hot (maybe 3/4 or pegged).
I'm not sure what might cause a slight change in where the needle sits for normal, but it sounds like you're okay.

My 02 Cooper temp gauge reads half way in winter (10 c for me) and a bees knee above halfway in the summer (35-40 C with aircon and electric fans running). In 9 years it has never varied from these 2 positions and never overheated. Coolant is changed every 4 years using BMW antifreeze which I was surprised to find out is less expensive than aftermarket stuff.
