This is my first post so apologies if this has been covered already.
Is it just me or is the TLC package a right con?
My wife and I bought our MINI One (new model) brand new in 2007 and purchased the TLC package. The car is driven very gently and has just covered 40,000.
In November 2010 the car indicated a maintenance service so we booked it in under TLC. The dealer said that they had done the routine maintenance but had also noticed that the rear pads were approaching replacement. They said that they were not down to minimum yet but would be before the car indicated that it needed service again. They wanted £168 just to change the rear pads. We declined to incur that sort of cost for parts that were not worn out and the dealer then refused to re-set the dashboard service indicators because we had not had the additional work done by them. Remember this is to change parts that are not actually worn out but which they thought would wear out before the next visit to the workshop.
I have today changed the rear brake pads (original BMW parts at a cost of £50). The rear pads are worn but still a long way from needing replacement. The job took me about 20 minutes.
I am very disappointed with the dealership. the dashboard is now indicating that the car needs an oil service, I intend to take it in under the TLC package and see if the dash is properly re-set when this is done.
We also own a new Mazda, the services are at set intervals and are totally predictable. The MINI self diagnosing approach is enough to put me off buying another one.
It's a great car but it's a shame about the dealers.
