I have a MINI Cooper Convertable 2006.
It appears as thought the tail of one of the rear springs has broken off.
Does anyone know if this is a difficult job to do or indeed has there been a 'How to' posted on the subject.
Also is it better to replace both springs or just the damaged one.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

This is very odd. Are you sure that the spring broke off, or was it made that way? Does the car sit level? Compare with the other side's spring?

Usually springs last a long time, many times longer than the car itself. if you do need to replace, if the other side is good you can just do the one. If you are not a mechanic I'd have a shop do it.

Hello,

A broken spring is rare, but does happen. Last month we came across a very similar problem. The driver would never have spotted it if it wasn't for a switched on MOT tester.

It seems to occur when the protective coat begins to flake off and the metal then corrodes. The reason this happens varies, it could be a large stone causing a small chip or even the rubber pad the spring sits on has worn away and now the spring is metal on metal.

Either way it is correct to say it needs to be seen as it is an MOT failure. It is something that can be done with out too much trouble using the correct tools. If you are local to us don't hesitate swinging by and we will put it on the lifts and see what can be done.

If you do find you need to replace the spring then you can do just the one, however they have to be the same size and spring rating.

I hope we have been of help.

Regards,

Seb.

kind of weird why it was broken so soon but it could happen depending on the accident. Anyway, i would suggest you better go to a mechanic to make it sure that it has been replaced properly. For safety purposes. :bad:
