How To Replace Mirror Covers (WITHOUT breaking the clips!)
Wish I had seen this useful "How to" before attempting to change mine the first time! :)

I've just replaced my wing mirror covers from chrome to black too. Mine's a second generation R56 but you may be able to use the same method if you're struggling.

I've seen a few different ways of doing it including the mirror removal method. I'd heard some people had broken the mirror doing this so I gave it a miss. The way I did it needs two people. First of all I repositioned the mirror so as to gain as much gap as possible to get access to the clips using a long thin flat blade screwdriver. Looking at the mirror head on, I released the upper inner clip first (the upper one closest to the car). Have someone standing the other side of the wing mirror easing the cap out as you unclip. I then repositioned the mirror to gain access to the lower inner clip. Once I'd done that one the rest came out all at once, with a heart wrenching noise I must admit but in one piece and no broken clips. :)

Good luck :)
