Hi all,
Mini cooper S 2004
Would anybody be abe to tell me what that racket is please (see video)?
It's a shot in the dark I know, but until I get it to a garage (and have cash) your help would be very much appriated indeed.
The noise is pretty much coming from the left side of the engine bay near the top. Bought second hand for the wife. I didn't really notice it when we bought the car, but now it's really bugging me and we are getting a little concerened

if it is an air leak you can here. it could be the intercooler boot split or not fitted properly easy to fix
might be the rocker cover breather pipe leaking or split easy to fix

Hi Audime,
Like marque, I'm not 100% sure, but it sounds like a failing roller bearing to me. Does the noise get louder as you move towards the serpentine belt that drives the supercharger?
The belt runs around a lot of things as well as an idler pulley. The sound could be the bearing of that pulley failing. The idler pulley is at the bottom of the engine.
I had a similar noise until the pulley disintegrated one day. If you point out the location of the pulley, a mecvcahnic should be able to confirm if the noise is coming from it.
Btw, it's an easy job to change the pulley; it only took me an hour....
Cheers,
Dave

Sounds like an air leak (from a hose not fitted correctly). I have belt noises every now and then but nothing like that...

Hi BRGJWC,
Just to alleviate any confusion the picture does not show the Cooper S engine.
The Cooper S is similar, but the belt route includes the supercahrger and there is a idler pulley towards the bottom of the engine.
Cheers,
Dave
