: Connecting an iPhone/iPod with the White Apple Lead Mark Barrett May 31st, 2011, 08:54 AM Guys
Newbie here on the forum - firstly congrats on a very friendly and welcoming forum - have been to many over the years (tend to change cars frequently) and seem to be a good gang on here
Anyway - on Saturday I picked up my new Countryman SD All4 in White - pretty well specced with Chili and Media pack. Obviously this is a March/April 2011 build car, so one of the newest.
Although I know I can get the ****623 iPod Y cable with the car (which I am speaking to my dealer about as they forgot to include it!) I am interested to know what the situation is with the standard Apple White USB cable?
Many people on here say that it should work "out of the box" with just a lack of video playback - however I have tried my car this weekend with 2 ipods (6th gen classic and 4th Gen iPod touch) and an iPad with 2 or 3 different White cables and cannot get any sound
I can see the track listings and can select albums, playlists etc, but just no sound coming out of the stereo.
I am sure the Y cable will fix this, so this is more out of technical curiosity - what are the variable parameters that determine on a specific car whether the white cable will work or not?
As I have the full media pack then my car should be fully enabled with Full Bluetooth, Visual Boost, Nav etc etc, so it shouldn't (in principle) be a car issue
Please can anyone satisfy a confused mind :D
Looking forward to being part of the gang
Cheers
Mark mjnewham May 31st, 2011, 03:02 PM Hi there. I sure you should be able to play music just using the apple cable. I'll check it out this evening.
Can I assume that all the firmware is up to date on the iPods ? Does the iPod Touch have Bluetooth? If so have you tried pairing them?
I have Classic with the y cable, and I know you still get sound if you unplug the 3.5mm jack and leave the USB in.
BTW check they give you the correct y cable before you leave as one doesn't give you video. mjnewham May 31st, 2011, 05:40 PM Just drove home listening to music on my iPhone using the White Apple sync cable - sounds like you might have a problem.. Mark Barrett Jun 1st, 2011, 05:54 PM Thanks for the feedback
So I got the "Y Cable" today and now all works perfectly - so my sanity is restored in that I at least know the ipods and ipad I tried were all at the right software version.
I tried 3 different white cables, so I am not sure it was a cable problem - so somehow, somewhere my Countryman was just not going to put Audio through the white cable
Until we hear from more Countryman drivers I guess we won't know whether it is a small glitch on my car, or a generic issue.
At least the Y cable fixed it, so I am a happy iPod user now
Cheers

Excellent Mutley MCS Jun 16th, 2011, 12:46 PM I have a 2011 JCW with visual boost, HK sound and the USB port. Mine would not play sound through the Apple cable either, I had to plug an auxiliary cable in to get sound although I could select songs and had them come up on the vehicle display using my Iphone 4.
All was fixed when I got the Y cable though. EJB Jun 18th, 2011, 05:21 PM Can you use MINImalism & Mission Control via your iPod touch or are only getting music/video via aux and plug in? mjnewham Jun 18th, 2011, 08:19 PM I have a 2011 JCW with visual boost, HK sound and the USB port. Did you buy it after 03/2011 - I know Mini made some changes at that date and wondered if that was one of the 'features' that no longer works. Mazzy Jun 22nd, 2011, 12:38 PM Guys, is the Y-Cable meant to come with the car? I never got one when i had delivery of the car last week. Shall i call the dealers up? EJB Jun 24th, 2011, 08:29 PM We got the full BT, Media, Sat Nav, Media pack and it should have been included according to some literatre on the MINI Connected website.
Dealer initially sold us a cable that didnt work (no video / album art). We researched why it didnt work and found a pdf file on the MINI connected site saying it is included with full media etc, pointed this out to the dealer and they re-imbursed us for the cable and provided the correct video Y lead. tintin_uk Jul 11th, 2011, 08:00 PM I got my All4 SD Countryman last week, also with Chilli and Media pack. The dealer didn't supply me the Y cable either which I've since pointed out and they say its on its way. I can confirm that I couldn't get any audio through the standard Apple cable. Assuming that the Y cable will fix this with its sepArate audio-In although my preference is to be able to use the snap-in adaptor rather than have cables trailing everywhere.

Thats really weird, my 9/2010 JCW with visual boost is quite playing media using the Apple Cable - I guess there have been a few changes in the hardware since then.
I quite frequently stream audio via bluetooth with the iPhone in my pocket which is quite clever - no artwork or track details, but you can still FF/REW tracks from the steering wheel. tintin_uk Jul 12th, 2011, 06:47 AM Thats really weird, my 9/2010 JCW with visual boost is quite playing media using the Apple Cable - I guess there have been a few changes in the hardware since then.

I have a Blackberry for work which is my primary telephone in the Mini. When I have the BB connected via bluetooth (telephone only), and then try and use my iPhone for bluetooth audio the sound stutters.
Again, my preference is to have the armrest solution but BMW/Mini have made that so complicated with the different versions out there. I'm going back to my dealer today for attempt number 4!
