: Belt length and catalyst advice needed please!

Hi all,

i'm currently working on an R53 Cooper S for a friend of a friend who has recently been stung by a couple of garages and has asked if I can look after her S. Dont worry, i'm a technician with Audi and previous to that a master technician with Nissan, so know my way around cars!

She was complaining of the engine light constantly coming on, showing a catalyst fault. Two garages fitted O2 sensors. After I had a quick look, the car has no catalyst! She's going back to the garage from whom she bought it from to dispute this.

She wants to keep it de-catted for the rest of the year until mot time - cant blame her, with a full Janspeed it sounds amazing.

So, where is the cat fitted? In the manifold or centre section? Just need to know what parts to order, and if i'll need any o.e cat back parts?

Secondly, while I was road testing it the supercharger belt decided to loose a couple of strands of rubber, luckily not breaking. The car has an Alta Performance pulley, which I believe to be a 15% reduction. I'm unsure what crank pulley is fitted, as the car was originally a Works car, and i'm unsure what this consists of, and what has been done since that.

I need to know what size belt to fit? Many people say o.e is fine, whereas others say shorter. If anyone could recommend a size, with possibly a Gates etc part number, that would be great.

Sorry for the rambling on!

Chris.

Hi

Hi these sites will help you abit

motoringfile.com/howto/JCW_MCS_install.pdf

Realoem.com

The cat is in the first section of the exhaust which incorporates the exhaust manifold real oem will show you this if you have never used it enter the site just put vin in the search box hay prestow all you need to know about parts

If you have a 15% pulley you will need shorter sc belt but you will need to check the crank pulley if its a damped pulley is a good chance it's standard if it's not there should be something on it normally + something or ~ something
If not measure it one you have all the info give gt tuning or Lohan or 1320 mini they will help you out
They recommend change he sc belt every year also fit a device called the protector to stop the tensioner smashing the pulleys to bits if the belt brakes well worth the money
Also in that top web site it will give you the upgraded plugs for it they do do a iridium version can find those on sparkplugs.co.uk

sparkplugs.co.uk/pages/database/plug-detail-ccp.asp?partno=BKR7EIX

Hope this helps all the best and welcome

Here's the Gates part numbers I've seen listed ...
K060547 (1404mm) - Stock
K060539 (1385mm) - 15-17%
K060535 (1379mm) - 19%
Confusing since OEM v-belts are listed as 1388mm for stock pulley and 1374mm for JCW (11% reduction) pulley.

Cheers all. She's in need of her car ASAP so going to get a standard and Works belt and try them. As it has the reduced pulley, I'd take a guess at thinking that the Works belt will be a better choice?

I'd think so.

Spoke to Lohen, who are now sending me the necessary belt. Spoke to Broad Oak Mini in Canterbury who were extremely helpful. Cheers all, think I'm going to be looking after this car from now on, so no doubt I'll be back here!

Thank you..! I didnt know they recommend a belt change every year.. Ill find out from the company that fitted it which belt I need.

My engine light comes on informing me that the 'cat efficiency is below threshold' I think its P0420... The company I got it from said it had 2 cats and one of them has been removed?... Its had the 15% reduction in the pully and a bluefin superchip / remap... its very poppy and burbly when you lift off! - The light only comes on every few days when cruising at a steady speed... Is there any way of disabling / removing the o2 sensor that measures cat efficiency??

Am I right in thinking the FIRST o2 senor before the cat is the important one, that adjusts the mix for a balance of economy and power... and that the sensor AFTER the cat is only there to make sure that cat is doing its job properly? - Can this one be disabled to stop the light coming on??

Its not a huge issue the light coming on but its pretty annoying :-p
