: Poor MPG from cooper SD! mikeytaylor88 Jul 27th, 2011, 08:18 PM I have had my cooper SD Hampton 2 weeks and love it!!:D
One problem is the MPG is not close to what I would expect.
I know it will not come close to official mpg figures as cars never do.
I have done 1000 miles and averaged 43mpg I have driven mainly on A roads and sensibly most of the time.
Any advice or any other SD owner with this issue? Tigger, Eeyore & Roo Jul 27th, 2011, 08:29 PM 43mpg; what figure were you expecting?! S8RAH Jul 27th, 2011, 09:24 PM It's new, give it time.
I'd expect more from a diesel, I get that out of my Stage 1 S. mikeytaylor88 Jul 27th, 2011, 09:35 PM Well 50 MPG was what I was expecting as a minimum, my 2009 Cooper S returned 38 MPG so a cooper SD should be doing more than 43!
But hopefully it may improve after I have covered a few thousand miles! :s Nick_from_Suffolk Jul 28th, 2011, 02:50 AM I have had my SD for just on 2500 miles now and the average fuel consumption has been 56mpg. The variation (5 fill-ups) has been from 55 to 57.5.
There has been a small improvement over time, ie some small running-in benefit of around 1.5mpg. The car has seen a mix of A road and Motorway driving, but no real city driving. My 15 mile drive to work has only a single set of traffic lights and seldom any traffic, at the time I am on the road
By the way that is real mpg. The OBC is showing 61mpg for the last 1000 miles, about 4 mpg too high. Sdhodges Jul 28th, 2011, 02:37 PM Our's is reading around 46mpg after 3500 miles, I would have also expected better if I'm honest Nick_from_Suffolk Jul 28th, 2011, 08:42 PM Last fill-up 519 miles on 39 litres, or just on 60mpg.
It is possible! And that is not trying too hard to be economical. peterglover Jul 29th, 2011, 06:19 AM Mini Countryman Cooper SD
Covered 1000 miles, average 47mpg.
I was hoping or 50+. Let's see if it gets any better.
Regards jam80s Aug 3rd, 2011, 09:54 PM I've done 5000 miles in mine and averaging around 52mpg with a mix of town and dual carrageway driving mikeytaylor88 Aug 26th, 2011, 06:32 PM 2500 Miles more and MPG has gone up. I am now getting just over 50 MPG so very happy!!! nickmason51 Aug 31st, 2011, 09:29 PM i have had mine for about 1500 miles and only getting 43 mpg! hopefully give it a bit longer it will improve but i was definately hoping for 50+ mpg! do have a heavy right foot but thats what happens from owning 2 cooper s's!!!! mikeytaylor88 Sep 2nd, 2011, 07:21 PM Yep that's why I struggled getting over 50mpg as also had 2 cooper s petrol before took ages to get used to a diesel! Minimainiac Sep 4th, 2011, 09:28 PM Have you guys tried working out your mpg manually? I have heard that the bmw engine computer mpg reads a few mpg less than they are actually doing. The Peugeot engined ones read above actual mpg. If I drive my 08 Dooper really gently I can average 67mpg over a tank full on the cars display but when working it out manually I am only getting 64mpg. mrobins64496 Sep 10th, 2011, 03:14 PM Last fill-up 519 miles on 39 litres, or just on 60mpg.

Thats 47.9 mpg, your calculation is off.
Based on £50 at 137.9p which is around 39 litres, it works out at 47mpg. gareth3685 Sep 14th, 2011, 11:44 AM computer is showing 50.2mpg and car has covered around 1800 miles.
Pretty happy with that - expect it may improve as mileage increases. Nick_from_Suffolk Sep 15th, 2011, 11:05 PM Thats 47.9 mpg, your calculation is off.

519 miles for 39 litres is, near as dammit, 60mpg. Not sure why you quote £50.
(519/39)*(4.5) = 59.9.
The car does spend its commuting/taxi life in sleepy Suffolk, driven at times when there are few people on the road (farmers and their tractors excepted) and only a single set of traffic lights. The stop/start system is practically irrelevant.
Where can one buy V Power diesel at 138p per litre? Flatcoat Oct 3rd, 2011, 04:35 PM I have a Countryman Cooper SD All4. My average mpg over 1000 miles was 33.4 ! I have checked the computer against actual consumption and it is pretty accurate.
This car replaced a diesel Octavia Scout and I was hoping to improve on the mpg from the Scout @ 34.5.
At a steady 70 mph on the flat the mini is only showing 40 mpg.
The mpg I am getting is not remotely close to the 57.5 which it is supposed to do. Maybe it will improve with more mileage - currently on 2000 miles. tandy Oct 3rd, 2011, 06:15 PM you cant guage an acurrate mpg on the trip computers really and you need to run somewhere in the region of 3000 miles to get a moderately accurate reading, doing it on 1 tank and resetting the trip doesnt help at all
you'll also get better figures the more the engine loosens up dude mikeytaylor88 Oct 12th, 2011, 06:03 PM After my remap I am getting 50 MPG+ when having fun and 62 MPG when driving with my eco hat on so it has helped + performance is excellent a must for all cooper SD drivers!! stevee Nov 7th, 2011, 07:37 PM 1400 miles so far, averaging ~53mpg.
On a long run , cruise around 70-75mph, car will average ~56mpg, one up.
The immediate, lag free torque, is very addictive! Great fun. Only gripe is the vibrating interior mirror. Minimainiac Nov 7th, 2011, 09:20 PM I'm glad I bought one with the psa engine now, just return from a few days in Normandy and returned 67.8mpg for the entire trip. Spotlights Nov 25th, 2011, 07:25 PM Just to add my result for the record, I'm on 50.8mpg on the computer after 4500 miles. Never reset since new.
But I do a lot of town driving in the weekdays, much better when on long runs... malcdt Dec 20th, 2011, 06:15 PM just taken delivery of Cooper SD hatchback. first 1,000 miles and have achieved 47 mpg. Like you, not as expected - almost 30% worse than maufacturer's guide. Still enjoying thecar nonetheless. I have had my cooper SD Hampton 2 weeks and love it!!:D

Any advice or any other SD owner with this issue? Angib Dec 20th, 2011, 06:36 PM I was looking at the Which? magazine test of the SD hatch and their mpg figures were:
Urban 53.3 (BMW 55.4)
Extra-urban 68.9 (BMW 72.4)
Motorway 51.4 (not part of official test)
Combined 58.9 (BMW 65.7)
So this suggests that babying the car can get it close to the official results.
Interestingly, they just tested the same engine in the new version of the 1 series and actually got some results that were better than BMW's -and all were better than the Mini's!
Urban 57.6 (BMW 51.4)
Extra-urban 76.3 (BMW 72.4) Minimainiac Dec 20th, 2011, 06:49 PM Brim the tank record the mileage and brim it again when its low and work it out manually. The pooters can be well out. Our Cooper D always reads about 4mpg over what its doing but I'm not complaining as were still getting an actual of 63mpg.
The later models can read about 4mpg lower than actual mpg.
My other car has been remapped and tells me i'm getting 29mpg but is only doing 23 with the performance map but with the eco map installed it tells me i'm doing an avg of 26mpg but the actual mpg is 36 mainly around town. Nick_from_Suffolk Jan 1st, 2012, 03:47 PM 8500 miles driven now and total fuel used over those miles gives an average of 57mpg. There has been only a marginal increase from when I first had the car, in the early summer. Driving is 70% A roads and less than 5% in town.
Low 40s is not right. wa5_3mma Jan 1st, 2012, 08:59 PM Oh no! Ive just bought a Cooper SD, mine is a 61 plate done only 200miles so far and got 47.3mpg hoping ill get more out of it cos at the mo i keep flooring it to feel the torque! pops106 Jan 14th, 2012, 12:26 AM Oh no! I know it is my drving, but im only doing 42.6 with about 13,500 miles in 4 months.
What I have found is the difference between 85 and 75 on the motorway is getting on for 8mpg+ goonerij Jan 14th, 2012, 05:11 PM Ha, ha .... 42.6! .... get better than that in our S! :D:D Minimainiac Jan 15th, 2012, 07:49 AM Ha, ha .... 42.6! .... get better than that in our S! :D:D
I get the same as yours out of my 300bhp 3ltr diesel and that weighs almost 2tons, on a run though ;) | |
