: Induction Kits - Are they really worth it???

Hi Guys,

Just picked up my new R50 Mini Cooper a couple of weeks ago (This is my second R50)

Decided i wanted an induction kit to give the sporty sound, and slightly better throttle.

I managed to spot a second hand pipercross Induction kit going cheap on ebay, so i brought it and fitted it tonight.

Have to say im really not sure. It sounds great when you pull away, but the rest of the time you hardly notice anything more than normal. Under the bonnet / hood i think it now looks untidy. Its not all that secure so i have used cable ties to hold it in place.

Has anyone else had any similar problems with induction kits on the R50?

Im really not sure what to do, i am considering going back to the stock air box with a new panel filter, maybe a K&N.

Would appriciate any comments or experience.

Most of the induction kits for the R50 are exposed to air heated by the engine, which doesn't help performance.

Routing cooler air to even protected intakes looks tacky

What's more important to you ... looks or noise ;)

Noise is defiantly important with any mini as far as im concerned.

But my engine bay is very clean, and now it has some floppy induction kit looking tacky.

Maybe if i make some kind of head shield with a bracket i could secure it better and make it look more professional?

Found this picture of a home-made heat shield ...

It would look better if painted black ;)

I agree, defiantly better in black. Not a bad design to work from though.

I've not seen the drilled holes In that front piece of black plastic before. Quite a good way to get more cold air.

They are very easy to fit, but I'm still not sure if they are worth it.

The pipercross kit I fitted only made any sound difference when you floored it, and no noticeable performance increase.
