Hi,
New to the forums here and hours away from picking my "new" used Cooper S.
The MINI tool kit sold by various online vendors tend to be over $200. Is there a reason why I couldn't buy the individual tools such as the jack and lug wrench at much more economical rate somewhere else?
I've read issues with jacking the car with different types of jacks and the issue with the jack point, but would any generic scissor or bottle jack be sufficient for roadside repairs? Do the lugnuts require a thinwall socket?
Is there something in the factory tool kit I am not aware of that justifies such a price? The cheapest official tool kit I have found is on eBay for about $140.
Any help would be kindly appreciated.

Try eBay or whoever your buying it off, get them to knock some $$$ off so you can buy from a dealer at over inflated prices.

In December of 2004 I bought an OEM jack, wheel-nut wrench and storage bag for $27.12 (list price was $33.90) from Classic Auto Campus (http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/classicauto). Today these same parts list for over $100

The tool kit that came with my 2002 MCS was a pouch containing a tow hook, hub cap puller, screwdriver and open-end wrench.

Yep!
Came with that pouch .. On the left inside panel of the boot, right?
It also came with the official mini jack. I'm thinking then previous owner picked it up somewhere along the way.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but the base model Cooper came with a tool kit mounted in place where the battery would be for the S?
The jack that have sits in the boot itself with it's own pouch secured by an official looking bungee strap.

Yes

As I said above I bought the jack later on.

I don't carry my jack in the car and haven't looked at it in ages, but I think the storage bag has attached straps with hooks for securing it in the boot.
