: Rear speaker change, what will I need?

Hi everyone, I have ordered a new pair of 6x9s for my 2003 Mini One, and have just done all the prep work (removed rear seats and door panels), and am awaiting delivery of the speakers (should be tomorrow).

I was just wondering if the factory wires will connect to the new speakers just like that? Or will I need some adaptors or anything?

Thanks for the help!

It isn't a direct fit for most speakers. You can cut of the existing speaker connectors and solder some new ones on but I make up a little wire with connectors both end. One male for the OEM connector and one female for the speaker. That way you can return it back to OEM any time you wish.

Thanks for the reply!

I found these and ordered:
"speaker lead adapters" from newministuff (can't link to another site as I'm a new member)

they'll do the job right?

Also, another question about the front speakers this time- If I decide to buy a pair of 4-way 5.25" speakers, the original tweeters won't be needed anymore- will I need to muck about with the crossovers in the car or will it just be a straight swap for the big speakers?

Thanks!

The newministuff adaptors look good but I can't g/tee the OEM end is the right size so check with Mikey who is very helpful. I have never seen aftermarket speakers that wouldn't fit the flying leads in those adaptors. Do you mean 4 way 5.25 or did you mean a pair of 2 way 5.25 ? You will need an adaptor to fit 5.25 or 6.5 and the 6.5s will be a fraction extra so I'd always go for the 6.5s. If you use co-axial you just disconnect the OEM tweeters. If you go for somponents at the front you connect the OEM wiring as input to the crossover. newministuff has a great DIY section to show this.

Ah sorry I meant co-axial 5.25", I'll disconnect the tweeters then.

Thanks for the help! The adapters should arrive tomorrow and I'll see how I get on.

How did it go?

How did it go?

Did it all myself!

Got Pioneer 5.25" coaxials for the front, disconnected the stock tweeters, and fitted these in.

For the back I got a pair of "Juice JS694" 6x9s from CarAudioCentre- these were a bargain and are really efficient, at the moment they are being powered by only the stock head unit (with the cassette? forgotten what its called) and sound immense!!!

Very tight bass response from the back, and crystal clear treble from the front- sounds great!

Will need to read up on fitting an amp for the four speakers now, as I'm greedy for more power!

The install was quite easy- I've never done anything like this before and took me just under three hours to do it on my own- I didn't even break any of the plastic trim clips! (Got quoted £120 to have it all fitted from various car audio places...ripoff!)

I'm very pleased with it.
