Are you doing short journeys in built up areas? Using gears etc.? I live in the country and get 45-49mpg going to the nearest town, Darlington, , but as soon as I start doing short trips it drops to 30 ish.

Defiantly worth looking into, my 2006 COOPER is getting around 400 miles per tank - you ONE should should be getting more.

less than 300 is crazy.

What were you getting before the service?

Is the car new to you?

i do 18 miles to work and back 5 days a week.

the service didnt change how many miles i get from a tank.

the car is new to me iv had it since april.

I would check the spark plugs for the correct type and gap. I would also disconnect the battery and leave it off for an hour then reconnect it and go for a steady drive, changing gear early etc. I am not 100% sure but maybe this will reset the ecu.
My car is a 2005 MINI One, after i put in new plugs, oil (Mobil 1 5w-30 is the type i used) and filter and an air filter my car was more economical than before, i easily get to over 400 miles before i get the red light on, i'm not young though and i don't drive it hard.

I have a Mini One 2002 and it too is drinking more fuel than I would expect.

I filled up 45 litres and I would have expected a good 500 miles or so on this.

It used a little over half of this to cover just 200 miles on the motorway at about 60MPH the whole way.

In town, I barely scraped another 150 before I was running empty.

That being said I have a faulty gearbox and had a faulty front wheel bearing. I hope these can explain the inefficiencies and once fixed will get me some decent mileage.

I dont drive it hard or anything and mostly keep it at or under 2000RPM. Even on the motorway I try and keep it under 3000RPM.

Just filled up with 18 litres... am expecting at least 180 miles out of that!

Doubt whether gearbox or bearing will make that much of a difference.

Does the exhaust gas smell rich because it could be overfuelling somehow. Is this exhaust tail piece sooty?

I had this problem too and changed nearly everything only to find out that the timing chain was knocking the valve timing out. This was found out after the chain slipped the sprocket and smashed my engine to pieces.

Definately get the chain checked out to make sure its not loose. May be an idea to change the timing chain tensioner for the sake of £25 anyways. This was the thing that caused all the problems with my cooper. The tensioer is very easy to fit and well worth it just as a piece of mind.

Hope I havent caused a panic but wouldnt want what happened to me to be repeated on someone else.

The other day I put in about 18 litres into my tank and have so far managed to squeeze about 100 miles. Now my fuel gauge is in the red.

Assuming 100Miles /18 litres (this is town driving), I'm getting about 5.56 miles per litre (25MPG). I do live in a very hilly area though. Is this normal? Does anyone else think this is a bit much for a small car?

I used to own a 1L Toyota Yaris and I was easily getting 40MPG round town. I also used to own a 2L Chrysler Neon and that was getting 30MPG. Can the MINI really use that much more fuel? If so, why?
