Hi,

I recently became a pround owner of my first cooper s. It's done 90,000 miles with one owner and FSH.

I was just wanting to find out if there is anything I should be looking out for with a car of this mileage?

Do they start to become unreliable?
Do I need to do anything special with the supercharger?
Any Major servicing or parts I should replace?

Or should i get rid quick?? Hope not.

Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Thanks

Brad

the previous owner has had it for 6/7 years and has done 90,000mls so he/she must have been very happy with this car.

I would just ensure that the servicing/maintenance is kept up to date and enjoy it !!

Has the car got full BMW/Mini service history?

As long as its been maintained, that mileage is nothing. The supercharger will be approaching rebuild territory, but with the background that car has I'd probably pay for it to be done and keep the car. Chances are its a good one and as long as you keep up the maintenance it'll run forever.

Why would you get rid of it? :) Its not that many miles, will do 200k and above. I imagine rebuilding supercharger is debatable, would mean half the countrys minis need it doing? Incidentally, check your log book to see if its the facelift/updated BHP version, from july 2004 onwards, which would be nice to know for you. Its not cast iron proof mind. Would have different lights and interior facelift wise, different flywheel and improved SC. Around that time thats when they started to become more reliable and less fiddly (like my old one!) so its a great model and year to have, even with 90k on it. So don't worry, its just like any other car out there, things can go wrong at any time, nothing to worry about, as the other guy said, enjoy it! :)

I have just replaced my Supercharger after 85,000 km (about 52,000 miles). They tell me this is a rare event but it happened. Also took nearly 5 weeks to get parts to Australia AND cost a fortune.
BUT I now have my lovely Cooper S Cabrio (2005) back and looking forward to getting some travel time in it. I missed it! :) :D

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately its a pre facelift, mar 2004. Does this make much difference? Guess it costs a fortune to rebuild the supercharger? Seems to still pull fine.

Most of the servicing has been carried out by bmw, the last 2 were a independent garage. I'm putting new disc and pads all round, changing brake fluid and engine coolant next week. A mechanic has told me I need a rear load sensing valve? Didn't now minister had these? Some times called brake pressure balancing valve. But he said its a little box under car that brake pipes go through and is connected to rear axle? And ideas?

Thanks

I have an 05 with 194,500 miles on it and it still starts and runs great. My only concern is the transmission, it seems to be a bit slow in shifting/downshifting. But with that many miles, it's bound to have a few issues. If your Mini was serviced well, my guess would be it's going to give you a lot more miles. Congrats!

Not really much difference no, same gearbox, different ratios slighter. I think the facelift has 7bhp more and some other small changes in interior and lights. Nothing deal breaking, usually they are over or at least £6000 anyway for a good facelift one with avg miles.

I've no idea about the supercharger needing to be rebuilt so I can only speculate, but they are also speculating a bit surely?

It would be nice if someone could say for sure why the supercharger would need to be rebuilt at those miles and if so, have most cars had this done? It'd be interesting to know as I'm looking at high mileage cooper s's as well (I currently have standard cooper) I mean is it the same of all performance cars with turbos etc?

Havent read much about it yet but this is useful: https://wiki.bentleypublishers.com/display/tech/2002-2006+MINI+Cooper+S+Supercharger+Oil+Service

So look out for whistle sounds too, and whining for issues with the sc.

Expected life of a supercharger is approx. 100-120,000 miles but of course some last much longer and some fail sooner. Fairly easy job to replace and there are usually plenty of good used Mini S/C available........if you don't want to pay the extra for a new or reconditioned unit.
