: Front Speakers Not Working - HELP!!

Hi Guys,

I have a 2004 R50 Mini Cooper. I blew the front drivers side speaker so I bought a 2nd hand replacement on eBay which only cost £15 - thought it wern't too bad!

Anyway, so I took the door panel off etc and replaced the speaker, turns out the speaker I bought was worse than the one I blew - No bass comes out of the speaker.

So to make sure it was the speaker that was the problem, I took of the left door panel and tried out the passenger side speaker into the drivers side... worked perfectly. So I put the good speaker back into the passenger side where it originally came from and now it does not seem to work either!

The only explanation I think is that the back of the speaker is magnetic, and a few times when I was installing it it did hit the door which caused it to magnet together. Can this damage the speaker???

Any help or recommendation will be grateful as I am stuck to bits!!

Not normally, put a AA battery to it see if it makes a noise

Just tried it now... nothing.

I don't know if its the speaker of the adapter that plugs into the speaker

Put it back on the drivers side again and try, to eliminate the plug..

Oh well, looks like two front speakers may be needed, are there any soldered joints that have come away, its strange not to have any noise.. PS test resistance of the speaker with a multimeter if you have one

It doesn't look like there are any sooldered joints anywhere, there is noise coming out from the speakers but just about. There is no bass, the tweeter at the top is giving more sound than the bottom speakers

check the settings on your head unit as you have tweeters you'll have low and high pass filters that seperate the frequencys

oh well thats my limited knowledge of in car stereo, Im not sure what type of crossover you would have fitted for the tweeters and mids, it may be just capacitors on the speakers or a designated unit, maybe a problem with them or you have just killed all the speakers, Maybe an upgrade may be best if you have got to replace them so you dont blow them again, but someone else here hopefully will give you some advise as I dont tend to mess about with this sort of stuff....

It's all original audio in the car. The back speakers are working perfectley well. I think it has something to do with the amp in the headunit, does anyone else have any suggestions???

Thanks for your help Stead.

Ok, what you need to do is try some speakers that you KNOW work
in the front.
There is a possibility that the amplifier stage in the head unit is faulty.
The only sure way to find out is try a different head unit and speakers.
You should be able to, by the process of elimination, deduce which
component is faulty.
Hope this is of some use?
