I have a 2002 Mini with 30000 miles with most options including CVT which first start in the morning when put into gear the transmition snatches to such an extent it digs a hole in the gravel drive after which it is smooth and no problem. I am told this is usual, but seems a bit violent to me. Any advise?

That does seem harsher than usual. Might be a software issue.
