just need peoples opinions . i need a new gearbox for my mini one the guy at the garage has asked me if i want the clutch doing aswell . what is the right option i should take all opinions greatly received . thanks

Always worth replacing clutch at same time in my opinion unless it is very recently replaced or hardly worn, as a similar amount of labour and dismantling work is required to swap the clutch or gearbox. Not something to risk repeating twice. Clutch parts kit is around £150.

lynnhusky, seems like im in a similar situation with my 04 mini. My garage informed me after a service a few weeeks ago that my gearbox needs a recon. They quoted £600 to recon the gearbox and replace the clutch. What ballpark prices have you been quoted???

£600 seems like a good price, make sure you get a gearbox with a reasonable warranty included.

I'm really sorry if this thread is solely linked to MCS's - I can't find a thread for my Mini One but I have a very similar issue. Advice would be greatly appreciated.. or redirection!

Mini One 54 reg, 46000 miles. Owned almost a year.

When I bought the car, no fluttering/ticking/paper in spokes sound. In the past few months, this has started occurring every time it's driven.

Doesn't matter if the car is idling, in gear, out of gear, gets gradually louder the faster I go and speeds up with the wheel rotations. I've tried taking out of gear also whilst travelling at varying speeds (loudest from 50mph+ and around 3000rpm) and it's still happening hence my diagnostic of wheel speed rather than engine speed. Regardless of whether clutch is in or not.

The sound itself is driver's side footwell to centre console. And is extremely irritating. Would like to know what it is so it can be fixed, I can check if anything more serious and so it's back to normal!

The heatshield has been tightened, there is a connector loose at the front of the engine bay which has been taped up, another part which the rubber had come loose from its housing - all put back together, wheel arch has also been checked and tightened. But still the sound happens.

It's been in the garage recently as had to have the 02 sensor changed, but they said they couldn't see anything it could be.

I'm wondering - could it be something to do with the crankshaft pulley / harmonic damper? Is there anything else which is common in these?

However since posting that a week or so ago, the noise is worse, the car although still drives is not being driven (as I'm **** scared it's going to stop) and I'm now on the path to getting the gearbox changed. D'oh!

Fluttering noises got louder and louder.. and when checking the diff, it clicks (car up on jack). Have spoken with both MiniMatt and minigearboxes.co.uk as well as checking on the forum... it seems I have one of the famed, dodgy Getrag 5-speed gearboxes. The design is apparently not the best, with the diff not fitting the gearbox as it should (think that's what I was told).. and the diff click is due to the bolts.

Mini themselves were YET AGAIN absolutely useless and only interested in making a few quid, so am taking to reputable, recommended people now that don't rip me off.

Fingers crossed getting a refurbed gearbox, replacement clutch, fitted + VAT for about £1300. Comes with 12 months warranty/12000 miles. They will do in a day and collect/deliver the car back to me. Sounds good to me.

Is this price ok?

Rover Midland box is early pre-facelift 5-speed One/Cooper, Getrag 5-speed is post facelift (mid-2004) One/Cooper and MCS has always been a 6-speed Getrag.

Looks like I have one of the earlier 5 speed Getrags to be put in.
Mine is a 54 reg, registered/built Jan 2005.

Car is being taken tomorrow to be fixed ... will feedback Fri eve/Sat when I have the car back... FINGERS CROSSED! I'm going to minigearboxes.co.uk.. so far happy with the conversations and info I've received, so she's all booked in :D

lisajayne86, I had all the problems you mentioned with my Nov 04 mini, 79000 mines. Have had the gearbox reconed and new clutch in the last week which cost £780. All the associated problems have gone since and it drives really well.

Mine had a getrag gearbox in it which the garage were a bit surprised by when they took it apart, but it would seem the Getrags are not a solution to the original crap gearbox problem.

Totally forgot to feedback re: the fix on my 54 One.

The more-than-a-little-annoying fluttering sound has disappeared :)

The feedback I got was that had I not taken the decision to stop using my car, and driven approx 10 more miles, the gearbox would be no more. The bolts had come out of the differential and it would have gone bang. Phew!

Ended up spending £1260 = this included refurbished gearbox with 12 months warranty/12000 miles; labour to replace; VAT; new clutch; £400 surcharge on my old 'box as it was in such a state.

Fingers crossed it's ok now!
