: Power Steering Gone - Easy to change?

My 2003 Mini Cooper S started having times where the power steering would randomly go out. Now it's completely gone and if you're trying to turn when starting from a dead stop it's nearly impossible!

I'm wondering if there is anything I can try before I have the power steering pump replaced. From what I've been told by local shops (not the dealer) it's between $700 and $1100!

Anything I can try first? Sorry I did do a search of the forum and Google and didn't find anything other than to change the power steering pump.

If it comes to that, anyone know of good instructions on how to change the pump? I'm not a great mechanic but I can usually do most smaller repairs if I have good instructions.

Thanks!

Just try and stay away from a rebuilt pump, I have heard enough stories and it just does not seem to be worth cutting corners on it, if your doing your own labor might as well pop for a brand new one with a fan.
