: Tyre law?

This has probably been talked about before on here but I can't find anything using the search. I'm looking to get a Cooper S (2008 approx) and I don't want to run it on RFT's, I assume the S still can't carry a spare??? When I took the RFT's off my 3 series the tyre place refused to replace the RFT's with nonRFT's... until they realised I had a spare! Anyone know how the law stands with this? Do you have to RFT's if you're not carrying a spare? :puzzled:

Not illegal not to have a spare, but if you have a spare it must have a legal tyre on.

I'd avoid that tyre place in future as they don't know what's right and wrong.

I've had normal tyres for the last 6 years without a spare, same as loads of people.

Ditch the runflats and enjoy :D

It's worth noting that Minis now, as standard, do not have either a spare tyre or runflats. If you want runflats, it's an extra.

Standard cars (without runflats) get a 'mobility pack' consisting of a tyre inflation pump and a can of sealant. You might want to get something like that if you get rid of your runflats.

Repair/recovery services like RAC, Green Flag used to always have in their terms and conditions that you had to pay if they helped when you had a puncture but carried no spare - but that dated from when punctures were frequent and I imagine they've dropped those terms now. Let's face it - lots of motorists now need their assistance to put on a spare tyre.

I'd avoid that tyre place in future as they don't know what's right and wrong.
I think they would say they do know - what's right is whatever earns them the most money.

If tyre places can't take the customer a ride, what is the world coming to, I asks yer?

Non-Cooper S owners can of course still retrofit a spacesaver spare if the wish.
Heres how:

no it doesn't,because the spare is not part of the mot..

had a few mots done with an illegal(if fitted to the car)spare..

i think nowadays you're told if you have a illegal spare because it's checked, but like i've already stated it's not part of the mot test per se..

MOT Question, spare wheel? (http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=644181&nmt=MOT%20Question,%20spare%20wheel)

That's absolutely corrrect. I ditched run flats and carry a can of tyre foam in the boot just in case :)

Our other car is a Ford SMax, they don't come with spares either but I've never had to use the foam, just called the breakdown service if I needed to. Whenever my wife had puncture the RAC guys got a bit confused trying to replace the wheel because they assumed that there was a spare somewhere that she hadn't spotted - d'oh! :-)
