Hi guys - am looking to get an 08-onwards JCW in new year at some point and am weighing up the pros and cons of a JCW. The Mrs and I dont need a big car (she has a new Mondeo company car) so I can afford something mad and small - I just love fast, small hatches.

I digress - one major selling point of the JCW is the 'claimed' 39-40mpg that is touted on most websites describing the car, though I read on Pistonheads recently that a JCW owner would be lucky to the point of impossibility of getting this on a normal, daily journey.

Does anyone get anything like this figure, or know if it is just a pie-in-the-sky claim or that it can be achieved?

My daily commute is 10 miles each way, either half town driving and half B-road, or half town driving and half dual carriageway so to be able to get around 40mpg would be amazing in such a quick car.

Cheers
Dan

Over the 12 months where I kept records, my 58-plate R56 JCW was returning an average of 28.3 MPG (min. 24.88 MPG, max. 29.36 MPG) based on a commute not overly dissimilar to yours...

I can get 40 mpg + easily with my 11 plate but it means no fun.

My town driving is mainly stop-start for about 4 miles of the 10, and the rest is usually free flowing but around 30-50mph with few stops so 5th gear at least - even so i thought anything above 35mpg would be pushing it for a 208bhp hatch.

richyboy - that's the thing, I could possibly get that by driving like a nun but defeats the point of the car, but I just wanted to ascertain if anywhere near 40mpg was plausible

Town driving steady, mixture of light traffic in a morning - afternoon more stop start.
38mpg but does start to drop quickly if you start using the power. Car is a JCW 09 Reg

I have got 47 mpg in my 2011 JCW on the motorway with AC on at 22 degree doing a steady 80mph (bham to Goodwood festival of speed and back on a full tank plus we stuck in traffic on the way back for an hour)

I get 35 mpg out of mine on weekly basis of mix driving. I do have a lead foot sometimes i guess it my age (22)

I do about 400 miles in a week - mix of town, backroads and motorway

Brought my 2011 JCW in june, i have clocked up 7,000 miles in it

Hmmm so it would seem the claims aren't so far from the truth. I'm not fussed about what it'll do when you give it death because even a 1.2 Clio will batter fuel if you live on the redline.

It's just nice to know that when you want to cruise sedately you can do so whilst still being fairly frugal. I am also looking at a Megane, either early 2009 R26 in glacier white or the new 250 in black or grey.

Love the extra space in the Megs and I am a serial Renaultsport owner - but I can't shake the feeling that I have for the Mini...

Best waiting til new Year and trying a few out

Cheers
