Hi,

My partner has told me that she seen a mini the same as ours so mini one first gen! with white LED strip lights either inside or on the front lights which were on with the side lights.

My question is i have seen these on ebay but are they simple to fit? do they fit in the inside of the glass lens? also where to run the wire to?

sorry for the questions

Hey,

Just a quick question i forgot to ask! it says that the new lights don't come with electronic leveling , does this mean you have to manually set them? is this easy?

Thanks

The standard manual levelling feature is 'supposed' to be used dependant on how loaded up with passengers and luggage you are, to prevent other road users from getting dazzled if the front has raised up. There is a small thumbwheel on the right below the dash to set them usually 3 positions although hardly anyone (including myself) ever remembers to re-set them according to number of passengers, etc.

You may sometimes see or hear the headlights motors moving them on start-up from the low parked position up to the thumbwheel switch setting position. However many early Mini's seem to have one or both motors stuck or failed in the down position giving very poor headlights! Often the best way to get around the problem without buying new headlights/motors is to disable the system and then get the headlights set at an MOT testers or a Garage with the right beam setting equipment and providing you don't load up the car to the maximum you shouldn't dazzle anyone. The annual MOT checks the beams are not too high to cause dazzle and set them via the small screw adjusters behind the lamps if necessary. If they are too low I don't think they have to do anything!

I assume this is what the NewMinistuff headlights require to be done and will pass MOT, etc but maybe ask Mike for further advice, he is normally very helpful as well as being a keen and knowledgeable Mini enthusiast.

The more powerful HID/Xenon type of headlights available are however a different case and to pass MOT have to have a much more complex automatic self-levelling system fitted with no manual switch settings possible for the driver and a powerful washer jet system for cleaning them.

Once again i must thank mab01uk for taking the time to help me, i am actually due to go for an mot in the next 2 weeks so i will double check, i did ask the gentleman at new mini stuff if these lights would pass an mot and he said yes so i see no reason to be concerned and i am sure he would have told me if anything was required, it was just incase i had to maybe swap a part over to the new headlights, oh and you are correct, i have never ever used that dial on any of the cars i have owned! and didn't even realise it was for load purposes! well we learn something new everyday! :)

Sorry friend, i didn't realise you asked me a question! Yeah thats no problem , they come with separate wiring, so you could run your DRL's off the ignition if you wanted to, or even not have the halo come on at all, its up to you how you wire them......

Help with my Grille above please guys! lol

This picture is actually for a Mk2/Gen2 2007 onwards R56 Mini and will not fit. Maybe they are using a library picture?

This is what it says and will fit. The earlier chrome grille surrounds are fluted as pictured the later facelift surround is smooth chrome, either will fit but needs to match lower chrome surround on front bumper section. The later grille has 3 horizontal bars lke the S, the earlier grille shown in ebay ad above has 4 bars, again either will fit and it just depends what you prefer.

Hi mab01uk,

I can't thank you enough for helping me out! I must admit though I am completely lost! Lol, from what I can see from the diagram it looks like the eyebrow part at the top is separate but in the eBay pic above it looks attached to the grille? The last eBay pic with the 3 or 4 grille part is fine with me and the eyebrow matches the bottom , so is this one just a straight swap?

Sorry if this is simple and I just don't get it! Lol

mab01uk
Mar 8th, 2012, 07:32 PM
Confusing isn't it........took me a while to fathom them all out when I swapped my first Mini grilles! :D
Yes, eyebrow part normally comes attached to the central grille part as in the ebay ad photo but it can all be bought seperately, can't remember how it clips together but does not matter if you buy the grille assembly complete as the whole lot is just a straight swap over.

When you undo the nuts behind on their plastic studs place a blanket over the engine as you will drop some! The metal thread cutting nuts need to be undone carefully with a spanner so as not to break the plastic studs and nut levered up gently at same time with help of a flat screwdriver to remove them.

hi!

mab01uk you must have a halo round your head! lol

Can't thank you enough! well i just bought that from ebay as i decided to go with the all chrome look! I hope you don't mind me picking your brain again? i know that you mentioned the black strip above the bottom bumper part and this can be unstuck then a new chrome bit stuck on but for the life of me i can't find one of these anywhere, maybe i just don't know the proper name?

No problem! glad to help, had the same problem myself, bought/ordered one new from my local Mini Dealer as it seemed a reasonable price a couple of years back, it is listed with front bumper, Item 8 here (schwarz/black or Chrome):
RealOEM.com BMW R50 Cooper Trim panel, bumper, front (http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=RC32&mospid=48010&btnr=51_4345&hg=51&fg=15)

Item 7 is the strong double sided sticky tape that fixes it on to the bumper.

I actually know far more about the old classic Mini's but then I have been playing with them for a lot longer and they more or less stayed the same for 40 years! :D I still have one in my garage restored that I will never sell, it only comes out for the occasional sunny weekend run now but I find new MINI's are just as much fun to drive with a lot more modern comforts and safety....

Hi,

Fantastic! I will get on to mini and hopefully they will sell this part on its own , i tried to get the chrome grille from them on its own but the guy at the parts told me they only sold it as a whole kit at a price of £259 :aargh: he told me to check ebay! lol

Mar 9th, 2012, 09:09 AM
Huge thanks to mab01uk!! just off the phone to mini and they sell that part separate! they have it in stock along with the sticky film! Collect tomorrow!

I really didn't want to phone and try to explain what part i was looking for! eh its the shiny chrome part on the bumper, the one above the first shiny chrome part! lol

With the part number it was much more straight forward......

Big thanks mab01uk

Hi mab01uk,

Hope you don't mind me picking your brain again! lol

I got the grille, it arrived today, now from looking at a diagram i can see you have the base plate then the grille front, so it looks like i just have the new chrome front and will use the original base plate, do i still have to remove everything from the car? or does the old part unclip and the new part just clip on also?

I didn't want to just start pulling away lol

All the grilles I have fitted have already been assembled on backplate, not sure it holds together without?...........are you sure the chrome slats and eyebrow trim are not already clipped to the black plastic back plate with 11 plastic studs on the back?
Sometimes the studs have been sheared off by the previous person removing grille......if so there are a couple of solutions to that I can pass on if required.

I have a spare black grille in front of me complete and if you do need to use your original back plate I would still remove it from the car as it looks like you have to carefully ease back various clips being careful not to break any. This would be very difficult on the car working upside down under the bonnet so not worth taking the risk in my opinion. If you can post any pictures of the rear view on your new grille I can compare with my spare.

I could be wrong here! i just couldn't see anywhere a screw or bolt would go to hold this into place

Mar 10th, 2012, 04:53 PM
You have the complete grille assembly including black plastic backplate, there should be 11 small plastic pillars sticking out about 10mm on the back around the edges, I can see at least one in your last picture. are they all there or are any broken off? These are what the thread cutting metal nuts screw onto to hold the grille to the bonnet. The studs pass through holes in the bonnet and the nuts screw on the back to hold grille assembly in place.

Ah! I count 11 so all intact! God i feel like a dumbass lol

Can't wait to get home and get this fitted! oh and i will remember about the sheet over the engine for any dropped screws!

Again i must thank you mab01uk! I will post up some pics when its all done, i got the other part from mini today also so i will take my time removing the old one from above the bumper as i know its just stuck on.

Many thanks!!

Make sure you have a small spanner that fits the grille fixing nuts (maybe 10mm from memory?) inside the bonnet and a short flat screwdriver to ease them up the plastic studs as you undo them, otherwise they tend to just turn and not come off, go steady as they break off fairly easily, a little washing up liquid or similar as lubricant may help when putting fixing nuts back on. Have fun! :)

harvey94
Mar 10th, 2012, 07:00 PM
All done!! :)

What i did was used a small self grip wrench so i could pull and turn at the same time, the sheet over the engine was such a top tip as when i undone the rear ones with no room they just fell when loose!

I noticed that some of the self threading nuts were missing, about three if i remember but i just made sure i done all the corners and some in the middle.

The bottom bit i just used a flat head screwdriver with some tape round it as not to damage anything, i used this on the bottom piece on the front bumper under its edge and it actually came away very easy, so just removed the tape film on the new one and stuck it in place.

Really does transform the car!

I really do need to thank mab01uk for all the help and advice, i know 100% i would have broken something if i just went ahead with no advice and would never have known the bottom part was just stuck on! it looks part of the bumper!

I will post up a pic tomorrow as its dark now.

Thanks mab01uk :)
