Hi all,

I've just bought a new MINI Cooper Convertible in black and pink, she's an absolute beaut(:D) and I've been wanting to get one for aaaaaaages!! Every time I get in to drive, i can't stop grinning :D I have noticed though in the last week or so, that when the engine is running at a stand still, she ticks....I've called the MINI dealership i bought her from and they've said to take a recording and then bring her in so they can take a look, but i was wondering if anyone else had experienced this at all???
I've heard and read about the death rattle..is this the same thing?? Mine is a 61 plate.

hoping someone can advise a new and very happy and proud MINI owner!!:D

To be honest I wouldn't worry too much about it, my 61 plate ticks a lot and whistles now and again but nothing has degraded as far as I'm aware! Be interesting to see what your dealer says about it.

My daughter took hers into dealership because she was concerned about tickover noise, specially when she was pulling up outside mcdonald drive through lol
told it was the fuel injectors making the noise and not to worry about it,sometimes noisier when parked up against walls etc.My cooper s is the same.Dont worry its a trait of the car.If you are overly concerned take it to your dealership to get them to listen to it.

Basically look at the new shape Mini like a mullet. It's all business at the front and party at the back!

My engine sounds like a bag of spanners in a tumble dryer so I just try to focus on the exhaust note... darn french engines!

Hi Ruby,

A ticking noise from the engine is perfectly normal. It is the sound of the fuel injectors opening and closing. However if you are worried you should take it to your local dealer to get it checked out!

lol, yeah the exhaust note is pretty darn sexy!! :D

Hmmm so it seems that this is a pretty normal thing then for MINI's, it doesn't bother me too much, just for a new car to make such a noise was a little disconcerting! Thanks peoples for your input!!

My 08MCS ticks as well. Brought it in to the dealership a few months ago. They replaced the oil pump but that did not change anything. I just dropped it off again for the same reason, I have a feeling it will be labeled as normal...

Our Cooper (2010 petrol) does the same, I took it back to see if anything could be done, bt no fix is available. It was concluded that it was the injectors, and I still think its unacceptable. I have heard one other car make the same noise in a car park one day. Still at least the ePAS doesn't whine like the R50's did!
Its one main reason why I got a diesel engined Clubman, as its generally quieter (though nothing like as nice on full throttle :) )

I wouldn't worry too much about it. As the other guys have said, my MCS also makes a ticking sound which is a bit louder when the car is cold. The only big thing to really look out for is the Death Rattle, but I think that only applies to the MCS timing chain.

Hi,
My 08 JCW ticks, i think they sound awful on idle and i also think its not acceptable but the dealers just say its how they sound.

If you compare it to the idle of a Hoda civic type R or a focus st then the mini does sound awful.
