Seeing as I don't need them is there anything I should know before removing the Steering wheel, A pillar and dash airbags? I don't want to explore the big bang theory.

Rally370 is building a rally Mini. :)

Usual method is to disconnect the battery for 20-30 minutes to let any storage capacitors in the SRS system discharge, then you should be ok to disconnect the wires and remove airbag modules as required but handle with care. Also tape up the electrical connectors on them as a random spark of static electricity could in theory fire one off!

Great, thanks I'll take some care. Is there a seat belt tension device?

Expect a ton of questions over the next few months until I figure out the Mini

Yes, each seat belt buckle has a pre-tensioner device built in........same as airbags just leave powered down for 20 mins then disconnect as usual.

Lots of 'How to' articles collected here on the NAM Mini forum which may be of help:

Also this is a useful list of various Mini 'diy' type links:

The Scangauge 2 is a very useful tool, rated by many Mini owners and should cancel your CEL.
Details here:
ScanGauge2 ScanGauge II Code Reader (http://www.outmotoring.com/mini-cooper/scangauge_2_code_reader.html)

"The ScanGaugeII allows you to troubleshoot your own car, read error codes, and the conditions present when the error occurred. You can also turn off the “Check Engine” light and avoid those costly trips to the mechanic."
