: asc and engine warning lights just came on

So on my way to work today, was in moving traffic when the mini started stuttering/hesitating really badly, then the asc light came on. It carried on stuttering/hesitating for about another 1/2 mile and then the engine warning lights came on and I guess it went into limp home (rumbled along at 20mph but no acceleration etc) i was only 1/2 from work so i figured I may as well get it into the car park.
I turned the engine off and had a look under the hood but couldn't see anything obviously loose etc. I started the ignition again and the EMS (?) light went out but the engine icon light and the asc light stayed on, and it seems very lumpy/stuttery.

I dunno if it has anything to do with it but last night when i tried to boot it around a bend the traction control really cut in hard and practically cut the engine. Could it be to do with that?

Anyone got any ideas what it could be before i call the rac to come and pick it up?

It's a 2004 facelift MCS.

Cheers guys

I have had a very similar problem this week, eml light, engine light, traction control lights all stuck on!

I have had the codes read, flagged up with a CAN problem, MAP sensor and a air mass calculation error.

I have swapped the MAP sensor, coil pack, leads, spark plugs, pre cat lambda sensor and the throttle body based on forum posts and the codes and it still does not run right. I'm getting a misfire and black smoke from the exhaust. All the parts that I have fitted are genuine BMW.

Has anyone had a similar problem, I have read elsewhere that it could be a crank pulley issue but as you can imagine it's getting expensive now!

Any help would be great!!!

Any progress on this? I've got both lights and a cylinder 1 misfire error, however turning the engine off and back on stops the misfire until I hit 50 mph roughly. At that point the engine is clearly misfiring. Replaced the manifold pressure sensor with no luck.

What did you use to clean them?

I'm currently in the process of getting some software to read the error logs. The AA only read the last event which was a cylinder 1 misfire, so hopefully there will be some proceeding errors to show why it is misfiring.

Ok, I cleared all the codes and then took the car for a short run until the misfire turned up and the engine+traction control lights came on. Pulled over and read the codes, there is a P0301 and P0313 which is a misfire and misfire due to low fuel respectively. I'm out of time now as I'm off away tomorrow but I'm thinking injector 1 isn't allowing enough fuel into the cylinder. It's going to my mates garage first thing tomorrow so he can carry on the duagnostics. I've searched the forums and no one really has a definitive answer for these two error codes :-(

Bad news, it's a valve spring :-(
