I'm new to this forum so be gentle with me...(apologies if this is in the wrong forum)
My 54 plate Cooper convertible roof won't close. It opens absolutely fine and as it should do but when I go to close is, absolutely nothing. No motor noise, no flashing light, nothing. I have to manually lift.
I am assuming it is something to do with the parcel shelf and the little switch in the boot that the shelf rests. Can anyone shed any light on this please?
many thanks :)

I too have suffered this issue (see some of my earlier posts). I thought I had it licked by re-setting roof and checking all micro-switches etc., but it's happend this year again - only once so far!
As you say, characterised by nothing happening - no flashing warning lights, no motor sounds etc. When I manually lift the roof a little, the red light above the operating button starts to flash. At this point I can re-tighten the screw on the hydraulic pump and can continue to close the roof normally (i.e. hydraulic pump lifts roof to closed, rails lock, sunroof closes and windows close). This leads me to the conclusion that it's something to do with a position switch somewhere in the mechanism (a hall type sender I think) - If this is working intermittently perhaps the body control module doesn't know the roof is open or closed and hence no action at all. Either that or it's a faulty module or a bad connection. I don't think it's the parcel shelf switch as this stops the roof opening and causes the warning light above the switch to flash. Also, I have by-passed this switch in my quest for a solution and it didn't make any difference.
Other possibilities could be a faulty thermal overload (this operates to protect the hydraulic circuit if you operate the roof too many time in quick succession). However, should re-set itself, but I have lef roof for hours with no difference so don't think it's causing my issue. I also read somewhere about a temperature protection if it's too cold (< 10 DegC) again to protect the mechanism. However, i think this in only on the 2nd generation.
Anyone else had this issue and can offer a solution???

I have the same problem. After changing the cable and latches in the soft top everything worked fine until next morning: The soft top opened, but when I wanted to close it, the frame came back in irregular steps until it stopped well before it reached end position. And from then just silence.... Could it be the controll box for the motor? The irregular stop go movement imply to me, that it is not one of the 8 sensors controlling the soft top movement,- but what is it????

I think I have the same problem as Minini and tickledpink on my 05 MCSc, but I see it on opening.
With open sunroof, when try to put top down, sunroof moves back another inch, then everything stops.
If I push up on roof crossbar just a couple of inches and hold, mostly on driver side, and push the open button, the top then operates and goes down.
Closing the top seems to work fully.
I think my problem may be a hall switch up near the open sunroof position.
I'll be interested to know if you solve the situation where it won't go up, but if you manually raise it a few inches, then the motor to raise the roof starts works fine.
BTW, I also have another problem: The front of the top hits the rollbar as it passes: doesn't stop but clearly interferes. I'm guessing this could be sunroof not being completely open, or roof needing adjustment.
Thanks for any help!
