whats up everyone

this i know is going to be a dumb question but im going to ask anyway.

got an 05 mini one and need to top up the coolant.

looking around there is alot of different opinons on how this should be done and where to fill it up from.

some say in the expansion tank some people suggest somewhere else.

some people say to do it with the engine running and air con on full blast.

just hoping someone can put me straight and tell me where to top it up and how exactly to do it as i always seem to cause and airlock and have to get it sorted wich im tired of doing.

many thanks

There are some links here which give various methods of filling and bleeding which may help:
Solving MINI Cooling Problems.......... - Forums (http://forum.minicooper.org/showthread.php?t=13263)

Remember the One and Cooper have the pressure filler cap on the engine (just a flip cap on the expansion tank) while the Cooper S has the pressure cap on the expansion tank.

Also if you are losing coolant slightly check the thermostat housing which on many have seeped. The new part silicone gasket looks just like the old one in my case but stopped the leak.

thanks for the information. its apreciated.

my car was overheating and i had the thermostat and the houseing replaced.

there was this swooshing from the glove box when starting the car and moving the car in first gear.

the car hasnt been overheating since that i have noticed but i still have the swooshing from behind the glove box.

any ideas on what this is.

thanks

Hi,

You have air in the system , i had this problem, you will need to bleed the system to get the air out, if your lucky then sometimes opening the RAD fill cap and squeezing the big hose to the left of the front of the engine with the engine running works,do this slowly as you may spill coolant out! please always make sure your engine is cool first!

hi thanks alot for that. im assuming that it is likely to overheat then if their if air in the system. kind of dumb how i take it in the get fixed for overheating then the dont bleed and replace coolant properly

Hi,

Actually no it won't over heat , mab01uk helped me and my friend big time with regards to the coolant on our mini one's , he was correct in saying they can be a nightmare to bleed! your garage may have thought it was ok, if you take it back to them they should be happy to open the bleed valves for you and check for air, it actually took me some time to get all the air out my system but never once did it overheat on me.

With trapped air in the system you may sometimes get overheating in bad cases and/or a cold heater because the water can't circulate efficiently + the whoosing sound behind dash through the heater matrix pipes. It can take quite a bit of time and effort to eliminate all the air and replace it with more coolant, on Mini's in particular.....which is why many garages don't do it properly first time!
