If you are sure there are no leaks under the bonnet check the heater matrix radiator is not leaking into the passenger footwell under the front carpet. This would explain coolant loss and lack of heat and is sometimes the cause of this on Mini's, although you would normally smell the antifreeze and get some misting up of the windows if the leak was bad.

Water noises behind the dash can be from air conditioning but also when there are air locks moving around in the heater matrix...........Mini's need a lot of care and patience to bleed all the air out the cooling system but until you do the heater will blow hot/cold. The coolant level will drop as the air is bleed out or finds its way out slowly on its own but if there is a coolant leak anywhere more air will keep getting in whenever the level drops too low in the expansion top up tank.

It will be the heater matrix take the vehicle to bmw and they, after charging you £90 to look will replace it with a 2 yr guarantee The matrix if you examine it will have two scuff marks along the width of it which after a while under pressure will start to leak we have gone through 3 matrixes since Jan 2012 On close examination of the matrix whether it is new or used will have these scuff marks It looks to be caused by movement along a conveyor Neither valeo [the manufacturer] or bmw will acknowledge this We have gone to Trading standards and they have agreed to contact bmw on our behalf I will keep you posted on the outcome
