Hi.
The service in my car is due in about 12k but i was thinking about changing the oil. The service was done at BMW dealers but this time i will be doing it my self as i am quiet handy with the tools around the car.
But i need to know what type of oil to use. The w5-30 seems very expensive. Is there any cheaper oil i could go for?
Any advice much apreechiated!

I did my MCS today and used Castrol Edge 5w 30 at a cost of £45 for 5 litres, its not cheap but then neither are the repairs if you use cheap oil and something goes wrong.

You must use the correct longlife oil eg castrol Edge

Hi ya
Castrol magnatec is perfectly ok as long a it's the A3 B4 spec you will need 5 lts I think it takes 4.5 with filter change
I change my oil every 6000 miles. I do a sea foam treatment in the oil 50 to 100 miles before I change it every second change.
Make shore you have the proper socket or the oil filter bowl of you will damage it

Hope the helps

Thanks for the advice guys. Will be sticking to Castrol Edge. At 15 euros a litre. But the difference in price from w10-40 to 5w-30 seems enormous.
BMW dealer used 0W-30 castrol edge. Interesting!

You can also use 0W-30 Castrol Edge, the recommendation varies on whether cold or warm climate countries/seasons.

Thanks for the update and all the info! I got another question on entirely other matter. Is it possible to have a compresion problem when the idle is a bit jumpy when cold the engine seem to rev higher than normal arriving sometimes at 1700 rpm just as i set of with engine cold but it goes to normal once the engine is warm.

It sounds like you need to plug a diagnostic reader in to make sure, it may save hours of searching for a fault you may not find.
