hi my daughter has a mini one convertable 54 plate and is thinking of buying a new shape cooper s but I am concerned that she will find it expensive to run! so although on paper it says the new shape are better on fuel, I wonder if anyone can advise? thanks in advance :)

Hi,

It really depends on how the car will be used, daily for work? city driving? if this is the case then obviously fuel consumption will be greater and also it depends on the driver!

You mentioned daughter so obvioulsy insurance will be less than say if it was for your son but again it depends on age, no claims.

Fuel consumption is a concern for most people these days due to the high prices but if fuel consumption is someones concern then a cooper s may not be the best choice? there are much much better MPG cars out there these days, BUT! do they look as good as a cooper s? :nice:

i have a normal cooper and that is quite thirsty , i want to upgrade to a S but its the fuel consumption that puts me off.

I have a Cooper S new shape. 38mpg is my general average and thats with a whole range of different driving from motorway to country lanes.

I would say that the lowest I ever really see it dropping and thats driving it hard is 34mpg.

I think the performance of the S is well worth the mileage trade off. You can still get good mileage depending on where you drive and driving habits. I have an 08 MCS and city / highway combined at about 31 - 32 MPG. Highway only about 35-36 MPG at 75 mph.

I've recently bought a dec2010 cooper s (the new engine). I live in the country and my journey to work is 100 mile round trip about 20 miles on B roads and 80 on motorway / dual carriageway. I drive it enthusiastically / hard on the country roads and 70-80 on the motorway (mostly 70 on cruise) I'm getting average of 36mpg from that. Worst consumption, (rally style on country roads), I've had 30mpg. Best, (driving like miss daisy, 40mph in 6th on the b roads and 70 on the motorway), I've had 40mpg. Those are averages; best I've had on a motorway only run (90 miles) was 44mpg.

If your daughter's not a racer, she could well get close to 40 average on mixed driving over longer runs.

Please note though that this is the new N18 engine and it is supposed to be more efficient than the first turbo engine.

I have a Gen 2 MCS , done 10k miles since I bought it, now at 42k on clock, and in those 10 k miles it has averaged 36.3 mpg according to computer , mixed driving ,quite high proportion of motorway miles, but driven enthusiatically on a, b roads. FOr the performance fuel economy is excellent in such an involving quick car. If you dont do many miles then this is not a bad figure . Totally recommend the MCS , drive one and you will see what I mean....

I was about to ask the same, because of my poor consumption.

I have a new R57 Cooper S cabrio which has done 130 miles. According to the car info I have managed 22.4 mpg over that distance :(

Whilst I do drive it hard I have only managed to average 12.8 mph!!! (from the same information screen)

So I guess that short journey, city (London), driving is a very thirsty proposition.

In my 2010 (60 plate with the latest engine) Cooper S with mixed driving(mostly round town though) I average about 40mpg-42mpg.

If i do a lot of long journeys on 50mph-60mph roads without stopping according to my trip computer(reset before journey) i'm getting 55mpg!? Not 100% sure my trip computer is correct though, seems too good to be true!

This is using super unleaded, when i use regular unleaded i get about 35-36mpg round town and around 49-50mpg on the 50mph-60mph roads(a straight run with no hold ups).

Comparing to my previous car VW Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI Bluemotion, i can't actually see a huge increase in fuel costs after changing to the Cooper S! The Scirocco was better on longer journeys of course(could get 70mpg-80mpg on a motorway run) but round town i wasen't getting many more mpg than the Cooper S!

Unless your doing a lot of miles i don't think you'll even notice the difference between the Cooper and Cooper s, specially if you're currenly running an 54 plate, The Cooper S should be cheaper to run than your current car! Road tax is quite a bit cheaper on the newer models also(only pay £115 for 12 months on my S)! :)

But would you be driving a Cooper S if you were a sedate driver? The great thing about a Cooper S - apart from looks - is its performance. I recently had the engine remapped and would be interested in whether this improves economy - has anyone got any evidence?

A Full tank of petrol gets me about 470 miles which is about 100 miles more than my audi tt fsi 2.0 gave me! my cooper s is also only 0.4 seconds slower 0-60 :p i would be interested to know about the re-map in regards to economy aswel....

Average 36. Maximum 39 on my Clubman. On my old 52 plate Mini 33 Average

That's good to know - I was hoping for anything > 35mpg - will be using my cooper s clubman for work, replacing a petrol 4x4 that did 26mpg so anything above that is a bonus!
