as title asks, how can I check front airbags are fitted and work?

Does your airbag warning light come on at start up and then go out after a few seconds? If so this should mean the SRS system has self-checked and all airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners + sensors are present and working correctly.

The seat side airbags can be replaced by a resistor in the yellow under-seat connectors to fool the system into thinking they are still there, usually when fitting non-airbag aftermarket seats.

The correct operation of the airbag warning light has been a part of the MOT from this year (2012).

You can use a B200 reset tool to reset and check fault codes:
