Hi in my previous life as an Alfa driver there was a custom of giving fellow Alfa owners a wave or thums up or even a flash of the lights.I personally never received it very often but when I did it always made me smie:D so I was just wandering if there is a similar custom with mini drivers?

Unfortunately, the 'Mini wave' seems to have died off. I think it's because they are just so common now, you'd be waving every 5 minutes, often more.
I suppose if you've got an uncommon model, and it's the same colour, and you're making a slow pass, a wave would be nice, but so many people have them just as cars, not because they're Mini fans.
I'd always wave back, so maybe you could get it going again?

Yes, there are a lot of Minis out there but I think most don't know about the Mini wave. They just think your a nut job waving at them. I noticed Mini dealerships do not tell their customers about the Mini community. Also, quite a few people think the Mini is cute but they got it because of the economy factor and that's it.

Modded Mini's often wave at each other but as said in the UK there are a lot of Mini's to wave at if they all did. Classic Mini's only started waving at each other once they became a rare sight on British roads and most of the 5 million made had rusted away! :D

i know there are lots of minis out there but i think i may try the odd wave or flash,could be fun watching the reactions.

I find that if you actually flash or wave, then folk will sometimes reciprocate... but if you wait for them to do it first, you'll be waiting a long time. ;)

That said, you'll still get your fair share of confused looks or awkward glances, and the people who only wave back because they think you know them, completely oblivious to the fact that you're both driving a MINI... d'oh!

Your best bet, as others have said, is to wave at modified examples, or rarer models (the GP for example), or "matching" cars. I always figure that a Checkmate or Sidewalk owner would be more likely to wave at another one, because it'll catch their eye... same goes for more unusual colours.

It's a shame really, because until 5-6 years ago, every other MINI owner would flash or wave... it just doesn't really happen now, because there are so many on the roads, and so many are driven by unenthusiastic owners. :(

i just got my mini about two weeks ago and in new york they are not that common , alot of people like them but they dont actually get one. So whenever i saw another mini driver i would have the biggest smile on my face and stare at them:biggrin:, but they wouldnt as much as notice me:frown:, but i still get super excited to see another driver.

I saw one with eyelashes on one headlight, so either the one the other side had fallen off or it was winking as it passed :D
