Hi!
New member here! I have a 2007 Mini Cooper S in Pepper White! Love the car, but lately it's not loved me! I bought her used back in July of last year with just over 34k on it. It has roughly a little over 36k and I've already replaced the water pump to the tune of over $800! I have to get the recall done on the turbo aux water pump... But now I seem to have a bigger problem...
I went to drive it this morning and the manual 6-sp would not go into reverse. Worse, the stick is all floppy and loose. I rolled it out of the driveway but I had to shift it to 1st to get it back up and it was hard to move it.
Something is seriously wrong with it! My husband is a good self-taught mechanic, worked on many Mustangs and has a worked up Jeep, but he hasn't seen this yet. He hates German cars. We had a Jetta and an Audi before and they were full of problems. He wants to get rid of the Mini but right now it's really not driveable.
Any ideas? Is there a cable or spring that may be broken? Is this an easy fix if so?

Thanks!!! :D

No one can help?
Ok, so my husband believes a linkage cable is broken. How hard is this to replace? Or should this be done at a shop?

Thanks!!

I would take it to a BMW/Mini specialist and have it checked out.

Ordered two new cables. Doesn't look that hard to do. Thanks.

Gee.. love quoting myself.. anyway..

So my husband worked on my Mini this past weekend. :D First he went to the dealer to pick up the new cables. Cost us $249 for two cables. Got to love German cars.
Anyway, he's got the Mini in the garage, and starts with the obvious and easiest part... i.e., checks out the trans to cable connections at the transmission side. He proceeds to take off the intake to access the cables. Tugs on each to see if they are connected at the ball joint. Both are. So as he tugs again, he checks to see if the stick shift moves. It does. Hum, he thinks. So, With a little more investigating, and more tugging, he finds that on the transmission lever where the selector cable controls, there's a black rectangular plastic slider that seems to have come off its track. This piece slides back and forth on the lever that controls the selection of gears. Turns out, the small shaft that this level rotates on is missing the "E" clip washer that holds it in place. TAA DAA.. Then he finds this washer in three pieces on top of the transmission.
So, he slid the plastic piece back on its groove, bought an new "E" clip at ACE Hardware for $.33 and put the intake back on.

Sheezafixed... as they say in Italy!

Drove my Mini back to the dealer to return the cables. SOB's charged us $45 to restock the parts.:mad:

Not really your issue...but I don't understand why you replaced the water pump for $800 dollars..the warranty should have lasted till 50K

Not really your issue...but I don't understand why you replaced the water pump for $800 dollars..the warranty should have lasted till 50KI bought it second hand and the dealer stated the 36/3 year warrantee was expired. If your telling me that there is a mandatory 50k warrantee for the 07's then please post proof of this! I would think nothing of going back and demanding my money back.

Thanks,

Warranty is 5 years or 50,000 miles, which ever comes first. Probably missed the warranty due to age not mileage.

I meant to say 4 year or 50,000 miles. Scratch the 5 year comment.
