: Top Speed limiter?

hi, i'm planning on going on a euro trip later this year and i will be driving on the autobahn's in my 2002 mini one.

my problem is that my car maxed out at 110-115mph in 4th gear not even hitting redline, the car just seems to stop accelerating all together which i find odd, and if i shift up into 5th it just stays at that speed no matter what kind of road i drive on, the thing is i would expect that if my car was stock, but i remapped it and it still does the same.

and i've heard people on here saying they reached around 120-130mph so my question would be is there a limiter on my car? or is there just something wrong with it because i'm sure it should be doing more then that surely?

so any ideas on what it could be are welcome,

cheers luke.

ooh by the way when i maxed out my car i did it on a autobahn earlier this year so it was completely legal, i don't street race or any of that.

Could be something simple like just wind resistance holding you back.
But have you made sure that when you press the accelerator pedal right down it is actually giving you full throttle at the engine, right to the stop? out of adjustment linkages due to wear or stretched cables can be a good reason full throttle isnt being reached?

wouldn't of thought so because i maxed it out a couple of times in different conditions and on different gradients and it always got to that same speed, the throttle opens fully it just for some reason gets up to that speed and stops accelerating even though it has a whole gear left.

EDIT* just looked around other forums is it possible that my mini could have some sort of electronic throttle limiter that kicks in when it reaches the top speed?

hi mate
given that you have posted in the first gen mimi one forum(? i think)
i''m assuming you have a first gen 1? if so what do you think the top speed should be? is it not just running out of go?

yes it's a 2002 mini one, and well i've seen on other posts people claiming 120-130mph out of theirs after they got it remapped and mines remapped via a bluefin, and it seems to have plenty of power until it gets to 110-115 then it just stops like abruptly because it climbs reasonably fast given the power up till that point then it just stops, i mean that's in 4th gear so i just assumed i would have more to come as i still had 5th and i hadn't even red lined yet.

then when i do change to 5th it just stays at 110-115.

Would of thought that was a reasonable top speed for a one myself. In all honesty blue fin is ****, I would remove it straight away if I were you and look at getting a pully. Also when you max out, have you had a look at the rev counter? If your revs are increasing and not your speed I'd have a look at the clutch.

what's so bad about bluefin's? and pully? sorry new to this so not up to scratch with all the terminology yet :P, and yes i checked the rev's definitely wasn't the clutch as it had a new one fitted just before i went on that trip. The rev's don't increase at all it literally just got to that point and stopped accelerating.

i know 115 is pretty reasonable to be honest and i won't exactly get near it during normal driving, i just felt as if the car had a lot more to give, but something was limiting it.

and thanks for your replies so far :)

Minimarque has gotten his wires crossed. For a One, a bluefin is great. For a Cooper S, it's rubbish. Also the pulley relates to the supercharger, which again is only on the S.

didn't know about the whole bluefin being bad for a cooper s but figured the pulley was aimed at the supercharger so was getting a bit confused..

yep..sorry i have no idea why i started waffeling about pullys when you have a one:p my bad
i would still rather not put a blue fin on it if it were me though. still if you have had a health check ...
still its your car.
also these people that crow about there top speed.....take a pinch of salt with most of them.

will do cheers and to be honest i'm not too bothered just felt as if she was easily capable of more, but there was a limiter of some sort on her. Then again i didn't buy a mini for straight line speed i bought it for the fun drive and great handling :D.

will just have to wait until i can afford to get a cooper s/ jcw or give my one a little turbo boost ;).

but still if anyone has any idea what could be causing it i'm open to suggestions :)
