Anyone know of any tiops and tricks for the sat nav etc? is there is a qiuick way to go from Map view to audio source select without having to move the joystick a dozen times?

on my 5 series if I push the i-control over to right for example for about 2 seconds the last page I had the sat nav on would come up. and down for 2 sec would take me to last audio source

Yes, press the other button between the joystick and handbrake that looks like pages on top of each other (not the home button). Unfortunately it only cycles through maps, phone book and radio tho, not mini connected :( (although within mini connected it has another use).

The reason the older version of iDrive did that was due to them setting it up in quadrants. In the case of this (or the new generation iDrive) it's not. It's nice on the BMW side as they went hot keys (for lack of a better term) a la Audi's MMI.

I'm not sure if you can have nav without voice control. Otherwise, you can just tell the thing what you want to do.

I like using the voice control for this sort of thing. I only use a few commands so far, but "external devices" for selecting audio and "map" for returning even work with my accent...
