As it's such a lovely day today (26 degrees) I tried to open the sunroof before driving home from work. The sunroof started to open and then shut itself. I tried a few times and each time, it tilts and then just slides back into the closed position.

I feel like it might be due to the heat, but surely sunroofs are designed to work in the sun? I last used my sunroof a couple of days ago, and it worked fine. I tend to only open it below 40mph otherwise it is noisy.

Perhaps it will work later today when it's a bit cooler? :/

Any little fixes I can do to stop this happening again..? Or is it completely broken now? :confused:

Mine does the same thing. With a couple of tries it will open. Of course then you get worried about if it will close. So far so good. I have an 08 R56.

I tried again when I got home.. :/ No luck. I'll try it again tomorrow.

The few times it has happened to me I will try 3, 4, 5 times until it opens. One time it didn't open but later it did. I've heard it's an issue with the motor but I think more like a limit switch or something. As you now if you take it to the dealer it will work fine so so far I have not asked anyone to diagnose the problem.

My 07 Cooper does this when the car has been left in the sun. I beleive its due to a current overload to the motor since it jams against the seals and hence cuts power to prevent damage, If you apply light upwards pressure towards the rear of the front sunroof and then click the switch it should open much easier.

My R56 MCS does the same. I often find that if you lean back and apply a little pressure with your hand on the rear sunroof it will give way. A grease up of all the moving parts and rails once open should help as well.

Usually in the tropical heat the UK gets now and again, the rubber seals around the sunroof swell (more inside than outside) so my top tip is - turn your A/C on let it get cool inside and hey presto - it will open no problem.:D:D

The wifes cooper D sunroof stuck last week, requiring an upwards push on the rear sunroof rear edge inside the car to get open. The sunroof had expanded in the sun and the rubbers were dry. A smear of vaseline petroleum jelly on the rubber seals solved the problem.
