: Help!!!! have I broke my tailgate?

Hi yesterday I think I did one of the most stupid things...... Basically I popped my dog in the boot ready for a walk (she normally goes in the front, but i'd just had a full valet) as my hands where full I placed my car keys on the top ledge where the hinges for the boot are. I then shut the boot!!!!!

this action caused the 'lock' button to be pressed locking my doors and boot!!!! (no open windows, no spare key) Aaaargh! after two hours trying to break in including prising the front window open and using a fishing rod to try to flick the 'open door switch', and prising at the boot to give the dog air, we finally managed to pull the key out through the top of the tailgaite, and somehow catching the open button, I now have damaged paintwork and a broken key!!!! (the dog was fine), but now when I shut my boot it reamins slightly ajar :( 164184 like so.

my key 164185. Could my boot be fixed?

It looks like its twisted the tailgate good and proper, it will no doubt leak water as its not on the seal properly and if there is a gap between the tailgate and seal you could also draw in fumes from the exhaust as youre on the move, so get it sorted quickly, you dont want wet getting into the boot or doggie getting gassed.
I suppose its possible it might twist back ok if it was that easy to distort to begin with?
You should 2 keys and not kept together for this very reason.
I know you wont ever do it again though.

I will have a go at pushing it back in, the neighbour got a crowbar on it!! hence the damage, if it doesnt go back I may need to take it to a professional. :-( ps I will never ever do this again!!!!!

I sympathise, it is distressing when you have locked your dog in the car.

My Labrador managed to lock herself in my daughters car (key in ignition, dog jumps up at the window to see where she is off to, big paw planted onto the lock button on the top of the door, all doors and boot locked).

The dog was happy to curl up on the seat and go to sleep, well she is a lab. Daughter was out of her mind and just smashed the window to pop the lock, expensive but with hindsight better than ending up damaging the door.

Not something you end up doing twice.

So glad i'm not the only person this could happen too! but sorry for your Daughter...... the struggle I went through trying to break into my own Mini as at least made me realsise they must be quite difficult to pinch! just trying to focus on the possitives of a bad situation!
